However, after a delayed start and eager anticipation, games are starting up, practices are underway, and fans across the Garden State will have basketball back, turning the excitement level around the state up to 11.
Prep Girls Hoops has been your one-stop-source for the best content leading up to this season and that continues in this article as PGH profiles the top guards in the Cape-Atlantic League, specifically the United Division.
Kimmy Casiello, Wildwood Catholic: Casiello is going to have an increased role on this 2021 Wildwood Catholic team with Gabby Turco Gabby Turco 5'10" | SG Wildwood Catholic | 2020 State NJ having graduated last spring. Casiello, now a junior, had a stellar 2019-20 season, averaging 6.5 PPG, 2.9 RPG and 0.8 made threes a game. She returns as the team’s second-best perimeter shooter and will only improve upon that this season. She has double-digit scoring potential written all over her, and 11.0 PPG and 6.0 RPG seems very realistic for her, a breakout season as a junior.
Kate Herlihy, Middle Township: Herlihy was one of the top scorers in the conference last season, averaging 14.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.2 made threes a game, 2.2 SPG and 0.4 BPG. She is a solid, all-around talent with a lot of intangibles and is a gamer. She’s going to be the unquestionable team leader during the 2021 season, not only as a junior, but also as the team’s leading scorer, rebounder, perimeter shooter and defender. Herlihy does it all really well and despite the attention solely being on her this season, she has no problem stepping up to the spotlight, so expect a big 2021 out of Herlihy.
Sydney Prescott, Our Lady of Mercy: Prescott is one of a few impact guards returning for the Villagers in 2021, but also plays well as a forward. She’s a versatile player who’s best running the point. She averaged 7.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 2.7 SPG, 0.5 made threes a game and 0.6 BPG for Our Lady of Mercy during the 2019-20 season and is part of a strong senior class for the 2021 season. Prescott’s veteran presence will shine through this season in a big way for the Villagers and expect her to put up near double-double averages.
Kennedy Campbell, Cape May Tech: Campbell is Cape May Tech’s best returning scorer, averaging 7.6 PPG, 5.5 RPG and 2.5 SPG during the 2019-20 season. She’s not only the premier returning scorer, but also the best returning rebounder. The biggest development to expect from Campbell during the 2021 season is her perimeter shooting because Cape May Tech needs a few players to really emerge in that role along with junior Isabella Schmucker. Campbell, also a junior, is expected to be the backbone of this team, so watch out for a possible double-double machine in 2021.
Alyia Gray-Rivera, Wildwood Catholic: Gray-Rivera, entering her senior season with Wildwood Catholic, is looking to capitalize off a solid junior campaign where she averaged 5.1 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.5 SPG. She’s one of two players in this year’s senior class to score over 100 points during the 2019-20 season, so Gray-Rivera will be relied upon heavily as she did last season to continue to play consistently and efficiently. Most importantly, she returns as Wildwood Catholic’s second-best defender, so expect her to average close to three steals a game in 2021.
