Tuesday’s Opening Night for basketball in New Jersey featured some great performances. In the first opportunity to make a statement, a number of teams and players did just that. Let’s take a look at the top players from Opening Night around New Jersey.
<strong>Madison Fernandez, Keansburg: </strong>Fernandez opened the season with a double-double effort of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Keansburg past Asbury Park, 41-28. The sophomore also had three steals. Kiara Castera added 20 points and five steals for Keansburg.
<strong>Adriana Agosto, Rancocas Valley: </strong>Agosto, a junior, totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace Rancocas Valley in its 49-31 win over Pennsauken. She knocked down five 3-pointers and made three steals in the win.
<strong>Malak Mowafi, Iselin Kennedy:</strong> Mowafi was just one of the bright spots for Iselin Kennedy in its 51-44 season-opening win over South Plainfield Tuesday night, finishing with 10 assists to go with eight points and two blocks. Olivia Sims scored 12 points and Sidney deVoogd put in 15 points to go with eight rebounds.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134607" first="Destiny" last="Adams"], Manchester Township: </strong>Adams, a North Carolina commit, led state-ranked Manchester Township to a dominating 65-44 win over Jackson Liberty. She finished with 27 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks in the win. Amyah Bray chipped in 14 points, seven steals and five rebounds and Devyn Quigley grabbed 14 rebounds for Manchester Township. Ariana Broughton led Jackson Liberty with 23 points and nine rebounds.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134751" first="Rylie" last="Theuerkauf"], Tenafly: </strong>Theuerkauf had an incredible performance for Tenafly in its 62-29 win over Bergen Tech. One of the top scorers in the state, the sophomore finished with an astounding 48 points, knocking down 12 field goals, six 3-pointers and six free throws.
<strong>Niyell McCargo, North Brunswick: </strong>McCargo opened up her sophomore season on a very high note with a 30-point performance, a career-high for the North Brunswick playmaker. North Brunswick cruised past Piscataway, 58-35, behind a 44-14 second half.
<strong>Paulina Paris, Saddle River Day: </strong>Paris finished with a game-high 29 points to lift state power Saddle River Day past Life Center, 85-51, on Tuesday night. The junior knocked down five 3-pointers in the game. Along with Paris, [player_tooltip player_id="134628" first="Saniah" last="Caldwell"], Dakota Corey and Cierra Pearson finished in double figures for Saddle River Day.
<strong>Stephanie Van Note, Sayreville: </strong>Van Note paced Sayreville with 25 points in Sayreville’s 46-39 win at Colonia. The senior had 10 of her 25 points come at the foul line.
<strong>Aaylah Del Rosario, Trenton Catholic: </strong>Del Rosario, a sophomore, had 20 points and 11 rebounds as Trenton Catholic rolled past Delran, 80-28, Tuesday night. Fellow sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="134644" first="Zoe" last="Brooks"] added 21 points, eight steals, five rebounds and four assists.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134630" first="Kiley" last="Capstraw"], West Orange: </strong>Capstraw, one of the top scorers in the state, opened up the season in a big way, finishing with 31 points and 11 rebounds as West Orange took down East Orange, 54-43. A junior Yale commit, Capstraw had her fifth 30-point game in her illustrious West Orange career.
<strong>Nicole Miller, Shawnee: </strong>Miller scored on a layup with 0.9 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Shawnee past Winslow, 50-48, in Tuesday’s season opener. Nia Scott led Shawnee with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134625" first="Marianna" last="Papazoglou"], Wildwood Catholic: </strong>Papazoglou led Wildwood Catholic with 32 points in a season-opening 89-19 win over Cape May Tech. She hit three triples and led four double-figure scorers for Wildwood Catholic.
