With the high school basketball regular season still on pause in California, various grassroots events and open runs have sprouted up to help fill the temporary void. One of those events is the We Run exclusive open runs each Sunday.
Some of the top talent in SoCal have participated in the runs from Stanford commit [player_tooltip player_id="49223" first="KiKi" last="Iriafen"] to Cal commits Jada Curry and Jailah Donald, UNLV commit Alyssa Durazo-Frescas, USC commit [player_tooltip player_id="49225" first="Rayah" last="Marshall"], CSUN commit Michelle Duchemin, and many more.
There are plenty of other players too who have taken part in the open runs who may be flying under the radar a little bit. Here’s a look at some of those players.
1. Kate Bobadilla - Twentynine Palms 2022
Bobadilla is a solid point guard who has great court vision. She pushes the ball well in transition. She draws the defense in with her slashing game and drops the pass off to an open teammate. Keeps her head up and looks for cutters around the rim. Offensively, she has a nice little floater when she gets into the lane. She’s crafty around the rim and has good footwork to side step defenders. Good shooter from three-point range.
2. Alexis Mead - Riverside King 2021
Mead has really come into her own as a scoring guard. From the first time I ever watched her play, her defense and her playmaking were the two main things that stood out, but she’s really made improvements scoring the ball. She’s quick and can get into the lane with ease. She’s such a good ball-handler, she puts the defense on skates and buries jumpers in their face. Can hit pull-up threes in transition. She’s got a really complete game.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="103357" first="London" last="Gamble"] - Westlake 2022
Gamble really stands out for her defensive ability. She locks up on that end, and she applies pressure in the backcourt. Her offensive game has gotten more refined as well. She can handle the ball under pressure and she really keeps the defense on their heels with her quickness in transition. She’s able to shoot off the dribble or she can put on the jets and get all the way to the rim.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="103345" first="Hailey" last="Johnson"] - JSerra 2022
Johnson really has some potential as a strong stretch four. She already has good range on her jumper; looks very comfortable shooting from midrange. She has good size and can also play in the post. She gets good position in the paint and finishes strong at the rim. Very active and aggressive on defensive. She’s a pretty decent rim protector and shot blocker.
