Here are five standout sophomores from this past week’s action:
Salese Blow | 2023 | 5’9” Point Guard | Plano HS – Blow played with a lot of energy on Tuesday. The 2023 guard did a little bit of everything. She attacked the basket with success while also showing that she can hit the three off the dribble and from the catch. That said, I was most impressed with her defense. She had quick hands and constantly harassed opposing ball handlers. The intensity she played with at both ends is worth noting as well.
Monica Marsh | 2023 | 5’4” Combo Guard | Plano West HS – Marsh is a dynamic combo guard who can put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways. She displayed the ability to create her own shot by burying a pull-up mid-range jumper after shaking of her defender with a good-looking crossover. The Plano West sophomore hit some floaters and runners after getting into the teeth of the defense too, displaying good touch around the rim.
Cecilia Cerone | 2023 | 5’8” Combo Guard | Grapevine HS – After conducting a bit of research, I was unsurprised to learn that Cerone is a talented goalkeeper on top of being a varsity basketball player. Her goalie experience translated onto the hardwood against Colleyville Heritage. The two-sport athlete did a beautiful job of getting into the passing lanes and forcing her opponents into turnovers, coming away with several steals. Beyond that, she made some excellent passes and scored the game-sealing layup in transition.
Emi Steele | 2023 | 5’10” Small Forward | Colleyville Heritage HS – Steele is her team’s leading scorer and rebounder, an impressive feat as an underclassman. The sophomore forward is averaging 13 points and seven rebounds per game this season. Although she didn’t have her best night shooting the ball, she found other ways to contribute. Steele recorded a season high in rebounds on Friday, accounting for 14 boards. She was a monster on the glass, doing an outstanding job of boxing out and elevating to secure the ball.
Sibelle Zambie | 2023 | 5’7” Shooting Guard | Plano West HS – I first saw Zambie about a year and a half ago with her club team and she absolutely lit it up from behind the arc. She was the first person off the bench for the Wolves on Tuesday, providing them with some instant offense. The 2023 two-guard has a shooters mentality, continuing to put up shots without being discouraged by a few early misses. She knocked down a three in the second quarter and also showed that she is a terrific ball handler with some flashy dribbling in the open court.
