Finally, the ball is bouncing in high school gyms across the Garden State. Now that the games are being played, let’s take a look at the top teams in New Jersey.
1. Rutgers Prep: Simply put, Prep is loaded. They beat St. John Vianney this summer in the championship game of No Boyz Allowed. They have a star in Villanova-bound [player_tooltip player_id="134611" first="Christina" last="Dalce"]. Mia Yanogacio (Delaware) and Kylie Favours (Lafayette) are standouts and they have a key transfer (Katie Ledden) and the best freshman (Mikayla Blakes) in the state.
2. St. John Vianney: The Lancers were one of the top two teams in the state last season and return their entire squad. [player_tooltip player_id="134626" first="Madison" last="St. Rose"] is the headliner and [player_tooltip player_id="134610" first="Katie" last="Hill"] is the glue that holds the team together.
3. Red Bank Catholic: On paper, this is the most talented team in the state. Can RBC finally put it all together and dominate the Shore Conference? The lineup includes Lucy Alberici (Stevens commit), Antonia Panayides (Monmouth), Sophia Sabino (Fordham), [player_tooltip player_id="134631" first="Ally" last="Carman"] (Boston College) and [player_tooltip player_id="134627" first="Justine" last="Pissott"] (Tennessee). Wow.
4. Trenton Catholic Academy: The Iron Mikes are young. [player_tooltip player_id="134622" first="Jasmin" last="Boyd"] is the senior leader of the team, which is led by a trio of sophomores in [player_tooltip player_id="134644" first="Zoe" last="Brooks"], [player_tooltip player_id="134646" first="Angelica" last="Velez"] and [player_tooltip player_id="134643" first="Aalyah" last="Del Rosario"]. Freshmen Aurora Almon is a player to keep an eye on.
5. Saddle River Day: The Rebels are the most talented offensive squad in the state. You can pencil in Paulina Paris and [player_tooltip player_id="134628" first="Saniah" last="Caldwell"] for a combined 50 points per game, and they have strong role players like Cierra Pearson to handle the dirty work like locking up on defense and rebounding.
6. Paul VI: Point guard [player_tooltip player_id="134645" first="Hannah" last="Hidalgo"] was arguably the top freshman in the state a year ago and she will be joined by scoring machine [player_tooltip player_id="134642" first="Veyoni" last="Davis"], a transfer from Moorestown Friends. Throw in the rugged Nile Miller and Paul VI is clearly South Jersey’s top squad.
7. Cherokee: The Chiefs went 30-1 last season thanks in big part to the play of Boston University commit [player_tooltip player_id="134612" first="Alexa" last="Therien"]. Katie Fricker and [player_tooltip player_id="134757" first="Gabby" last="Recinto"] are the other two names to know for Cherokee.
8. Ramapo: After going 28-3 a season ago, it will be virtually impossible for Ramapo to sneak up on anyone this season. Still, the balanced squad will make a lot of noise in North Jersey thanks to the play of [player_tooltip player_id="134639" first="Madison" last="Schiller"] and [player_tooltip player_id="155552" first="Lauren" last="Achter"], the team’s leading scorers.
9. Sparta: Although the squad is young, don’t sleep on Sparta. [player_tooltip player_id="155444" first="Brynn" last="McCurry"] and [player_tooltip player_id="155447" first="Ally" last="Sweeney"] were top-10 frosh a season ago and are capable of carrying the team. Also, watch out for Mason Munier and Bailey Chapman, who are full of potential.
10. Manchester: [player_tooltip player_id="134607" first="Destiny" last="Adams"] is the best player in New Jersey. She’s long, active on both ends of the floor, can punish you in the paint and knock down the long ball. The North Carolina commit will receive plenty of help from Myah Hourigan, Devyn Quigley and Amyah Bray.
