After one frame, it appeared as if the game would be a rout as the Vikings raced out to a 17-5 advantage after one quarter. Because of the scoring heroics of one of its star players and some timely defensive work, Blackville-Hilda managed to keep the game close and even got to within single digits of Denmark-Olar.
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand in Denmark, South Carolina to take in the action. Here is a look at who stood out from Tuesday evening’s game.
Anija Jones Anija Jones 5'9" | SG South Aiken | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Denmark-Olar High School – Jones earned herself an A for effort in this game. And that effort was seen on both ends of the floor. Jones managed to provide defensive assistance as well as be an offensive force by getting to the free throw line and hitting shots from the stripe. She possesses a 3-point shot as well and is fearless in terms of going after defenders. Jones finished her game with 14 points in addition to draining seven of her eight free throw attempts.
Rishona Washington Rishona Washington 6'0" | C Blackville-Hilda | 2021 State SC – 2021 – Blackville-Hilda High School – While the Hawks may not have picked up the win, Washington made sure that from start to finish that Blackville-Hilda remained in the game. She plays with an edge that coaches and fans love to see. That is seen on the offensive end when she is driving to the hoop either uncontested or against several defenders as well as on defense when she is patrolling the paint or setting up for a shot block. On occasion, she will find two points to attract contract and find herself at the line. Washington also possesses ball handling skills most commonly seen in point guards. She led all scorers with 30 of her team’s 37 points.
Dy’Neka Roberts Dy’Neka Roberts 5'8" | SF Denmark-Olar | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Denmark-Olar High School – Roberts is a DyNamic talent for Terrance Jones’ Vikings team. She displayed her abilities as a consistent scorer being one of three Denmark-Olar starters that scored at least once in all four frames. And part of that involves her getting in the right position for her to convert on high-percentage shots near the basket. Roberts is also an effective rebounder is also a threat to make things happen on defense as well – which can come in useful in games such as Tuesday’s that were dictated by defense. Roberts concluded her evening with 12 points.
Chiante Daniels – 2021 – Blackville-Hilda High School – As a senior, she is someone who one may want to get a close glimpse of with only a few games remaining in her high school career. She brings versatility to a Hawks team rich in veteran talent. Daniels can bring the ball up the floor to set up the Blackville-Hilda half-court offense as if she were a point guard but can also make things happen for the Hawks frontcourt offense as well. She is also a very proficient rebounder and has no problem rejecting opposing shots or shooting 3-pointers. Her triple in the second quarter accounted for her only points, but it is another case of looking past the stat sheet to gauge a player’s value to a team.
Lakiyah Coleman – 2022 – Denmark-Olar High School – The Vikings are not likely to take many Ls with Lakiyah on their team. Coleman is a dual sport athlete whose speed and agility serves her well on the basketball court as well as on the soccer pitch. On the court she possesses a midrange jump shot in addition to an ability as a rebounder. Coleman can also be extremely dangerous near the rim as well. Coleman was another of the three starters for Denmark-Olar with at least one field goal in every quarter and she concluded her game tallying eight points.
Bryanna Coleman – 2021 – Blackville-Hilda High School – The Hawks have a talented “Coleman” on their team as well. Coleman is also a captain – in fact, she is listed as one of the three team captains. Coleman is another who plays primarily in the frontcourt with the ability to take care of the basketball as if she were a 1 or a 2. She can also get somewhat creative with her ball handling as well as forcing teams into turnovers. Coleman is one opponents want to guard near the rim as she can rebound and she will also attract contact and find her way to the free throw line. Coleman finished with two points – both coming at the line and both occurring in the third quarter.
