Class of 2021 Top Available Players: Guards Part 1 By Michael Wholey 2/10/21 9:00 AM EST The 2020-21 High School season has been interesting to say the least. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the country in a number of ways and unfortunately for the class of 2021 has deeply impacted the typical recruiting process and scholarship opportunities available for the current Senior class. For the next few weeks we will take a look at some of the states top available players. # 32 [player_tooltip player_id="91519" first="Jasmine" last="Peaks"] (Winter Haven HS / Essence) 5’6 Guard Peaks is our highest ranked unsigned Senior coming in at # 32. The 5’6 guard transferred from Tampa Bay Tech to Winter Haven HS for her Senior year and has helped them to a 13-1 start and a # 30 national ranking by MaxPreps. Running point guard for the Winter Haven Lady Blue Devils and head coach Johnnie Lawson, Peaks has been solid all season averaging 5.7 points per game along with 2.2 assists and 1.9 steals. She is a capable 3-point shooter but her biggest strength is getting by her opponents and into the paint and attacking the rim. She really controls her teams offense, getting them set up into their offensive sets while selectively finding her opportunities to attack the basket. She is shooting an impressive 69% on two-point field goals for the season and is a perfect 6/6 from the free throw line. On the other end of the floor, she is a solid on ball defender who matches up with the opposing teams point guard and does a good job applying ball pressure and keeping them out of the paint and in front of her. # 33 [player_tooltip player_id="91509" first="Jaiyah" last="Harris-Smith"] (Norland / Essence) 5’7 Guard Harris-Smith is a player I have followed since I moved to Florida and it is hard to not love her game. She has a cool, calm, and collected demeanor on the court never getting too high or too low. She is a skilled point guard who has savvy court presence and can make blowing by defenders look easy. She is the go-to player for Miami Norland leading them to a 9-1 record and a GMAC championship. Her season stats say it all as she is averaging 14.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 2.2 steals per game and is getting to the free throw line just over 4.5 times per game. Head Coach Carla Harris has trusted the confident point guard her whole career by putting the ball in her hands and letting her run the show for the Vikings. # 36 [player_tooltip player_id="91507" first="Cheyenne" last="Stubbs"] (Braden River / Team Knight) 5’7 Guard Stubbs changed both her high school and travel teams for her senior year returning to Braden River for her Senior year after being at Sarasota her Sophomore and Junior years. And on the travel circuit Stubbs moved to Team Knight for her final spring/summer after playing with the Miami Suns during the 2019 spring/summer. This movement could have caused Stubbs to get lost in the shuffle as she is a skilled point guard, with a high basketball IQ, deadly 3-point range and is very good in ball screens. On Braden River she is half of one of the deadliest back courts in the state teaming up with Prep Hoops # 1 ranked player in the 2021 class [player_tooltip player_id="91479" first="O’Mariah" last="Gordon"]. Throughout the season, the two have torn defenses apart with their up tempo, fast paced style of play, pushing the ball in transition, attacking the rim, and knocking down deep shots in bunches. # 39 [player_tooltip player_id="91518" first="Luxury" last="Vance"] (Dunbar / Tampa Thunder) 5’7 Guard Vance has been solid for Dunbar all season, helping them to an undefeated regular season. She has tremendous anticipation and plays two steps ahead of the game. She is very court savvy with decent range and a knack for being around the ball. Two of her biggest attributes is her basketball IQ which is why her anticipation skills are so good and that she is a garbage player who is not afraid to do the dirty work. # 48 [player_tooltip player_id="91488" first="Amari" last="Hunter"] (Somerset Silver Palms / Miami Suns) 5’6 Guard Hunter has been collecting quite a few awards and accolades throughout her prep career including being named All-State twice, 1st Team All-Dade twice, All Tournament Team Jr. Orange Bowl twice, scored over 2,000 career points, Miami Herald Dade Player of the Year, and all that was before the start of her Senior season. Hunter is in her range as soon as she crosses half court and will launch it from just about anywhere. She is shooting over 7 3-pointers per game while averaging 15.1 points per game. She has a slender build and can play both the 1 and 2 and is one of the state’s best shooters and scorers capable of going off for 30+ points any night. # 56 [player_tooltip player_id="91510" first="Lindsey" last="Weingard"] (Krop HS / Miami Suns) 5’6 Guard Weingard has been one of Dade’s best players for several years now proving to be quite the offensive threat. She is averaging 21.6 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.9 steals. She has impressively scored double digits in all 19 of Krop’s games this season including scoring 20+ points in 13/19 games. Weingard can score in a variety of ways – she is averaging close to 3 made 3-pointers per game shooting 37% from 3, knows how to get to rim in transition as well as in the half court and finds way to draw contact and get to the free throw line. # 59 [player_tooltip player_id="91541" first="Deborrah" last="Seitu-Redmon"] (Palm Beach Lakes / Essence) 5’8 Guard Seitu-Redmon is another player on the unsigned list from the class of 2021 that transferred. After spending the start of her prep career at The Benjamin School, she made the move to Palm Beach Lakes along with Casey Lewis. She has emerged as the team’s 2nd leading scorer averaging 15.1 points per game giving Palm Beach Lakes a powerful 1-2 punch to go alongside FIU signee [player_tooltip player_id="91498" first="Zaida" last="Gonzalez"]. Seitu-Redmon is a strong, powerful 5’8 guard users her body to get to the rim and the free throw line. She is a capable 3-point shooter, but she is much more effective attacking the rim. Her body is college ready and she is extremely athletic and powerful with a solid lower base. Her best game of the season to date was a 28-point performance vs Spanish River where she went 11/18 from the field and 6/8 from the free throw line. # 61 [player_tooltip player_id="145103" first="Amarie" last="Godwin"] (Brooks DeBartolo / Tampa Thunder) 5’4 Guard Godwin plays a pivotal role for the well-balanced roster at Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate. The team typically spreads out their scoring, often having 3-5 players in double digits. The 5’4 point guard is the teams 2nd leading scorer averaging 11.6 points per game helping the Lady Phoenix to a 12-5 record in the regular season. She balances her game between being in attack mode, slashing to the rim and getting into the paint to setting up her teammates. She is a selfless teammate who always gives up the ball to the open player and does an excellent job leading them to rim for easy baskets. She is a pesty defender who can cause terror on opposing point guards with her ball pressure and anticipation skills running through passing lanes. # 91 [player_tooltip player_id="91521" first="Lauryn" last="Hornstein"] (Krop HS / Miami Suns) 5’6 Guard Hornstein is one of the state’s most underrated players making up one of the state’s top backcourts to go alongside [player_tooltip player_id="91510" first="Lindsey" last="Weingard"]. The tag team duo typically make up 60% of their teams scoring – playing batman and robin alongside each other consistently. Hornstein has a deceptive first step and athleticism where she lulls her defenders to sleep setting them up from the perimeter and uses that to get into the paint and shoot a floater. She is a deadly 3 poitn shooter who is always capable of knocking down 3-4 in a row. She is averaging 12.5 points per game shooting 31% from 3.
