It has been an exciting start to the 2021 girls basketball season, and we’ve seen some great matchups. The week of Feb. 8 will have some more must-see games in store. Let’s take a look at the games to watch this week.
<strong>Hudson Catholic at Lincoln, Feb. 8: </strong>Hudson Catholic, behind senior guard [player_tooltip player_id="134618" first="Zanai" last="Jones"], junior guard Kayla Beckford and senior forward Adiana Pacheco, is 3-1 and recently had a quality double-digit victory over Bayonne after a tight loss to Immaculate Heart. Lincoln is 4-0 and has dominated in wins over Memorial, St. Dominic, North Bergen and Hoboken. Senior guard Jakira Coar leads the team 26.5 points per game.
<strong>Manasquan at Manchester Township, Feb. 9: </strong>An exciting Shore Conference tilt is on tap Tuesday when Manasquan takes on Manchester Township. Manchester Township is 5-0 and senior sensation [player_tooltip player_id="134607" first="Destiny" last="Adams"], committed to UNC, has been on an absolute tear, averaging 28.2 points and 17.8 rebounds per game. Manasquan is 3-1, with its lone setback against St. Rose. Mary Elizabeth Donnelly, [player_tooltip player_id="155468" first="Brooke" last="Hollawell"] and [player_tooltip player_id="134632" first="Georgia" last="Heine"], three junior guards, have led the way for a very balanced Manasquan group. The teams will also do battle on Feb. 11.
<strong>Stuart Day at Trenton Catholic, Feb. 9: </strong>Stuart Day, which will do battle with Cherokee later in the week, meets powerhouse Trenton Catholic, the second-ranked team in the state. Stuart Day plays a gauntlet of a schedule against the likes of Rutgers Prep, Saddle River Day, Cherokee and Paul VI. The team is off to a 4-0 start behind seniors [player_tooltip player_id="134617" first="Nia" last="Melvin"], Aleah James, [player_tooltip player_id="159447" first="Laila" last="Fair"] and [player_tooltip player_id="134616" first="Ariel" last="Jenkins"]. Trenton Catholic, at 3-0, will look to sophomores [player_tooltip player_id="134644" first="Zoe" last="Brooks"] and Aaylah Del Rosario to lead the charge.
<strong>Immaculate Heart at Ramapo, Feb. 9: </strong>A big game in Bergen County takes place Tuesday evening. Immaculate Heart, at 4-0 and coming off a big win over Hudson Catholic last week, will have a road challenge against Ramapo. Junior guard Gina Gaccione has been strong from the perimeter for IHA. Ramapo has dominated in its 3-0 start. Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id="134639" first="Madison" last="Schiller"] has been an all-around force for the team.
<strong>Hudson Catholic at Trenton Catholic, Feb. 12: </strong>Two private powerhouse teams will meet Friday when Hudson Catholic takes on Trenton Catholic in Hamilton. These teams will be tested earlier in the week and will be ready to go for this showdown.
<strong>Red Bank Catholic at St. Rose, Feb. 12: </strong>Back to the Shore Conference, Red Bank Catholic and St. Rose will do battle Friday in Belmar. RBC (4-0) has a very talented group with Division I players across the roster, and an established starting five. St. Rose will pose a challenge, however, with [player_tooltip player_id="134621" first="Abigail" last="Antognoli"] leading the way with 25 points per game.
<strong>Montclair Immaculate at Paul VI, Feb. 13: </strong>Montclair Immaculate has not shied away from going against some of the top teams in the state, opening the season with losses to University, Cherokee and Saddle River Day. Montclair Immaculate got its first win after edging East Orange, 49-48. Paul VI is 3-0 with wins over West Orange, Cherokee and Winslow. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="134645" first="Hannah" last="Hidalgo"] is averaging 19 points per game and juniors Nile Miller and [player_tooltip player_id="134642" first="Veyoni" last="Davis"] are also steady contributors for Paul VI.
<strong>Saddle River Day at St. John Vianney, Feb. 13: </strong>The biggest game of the season to this point takes place this Saturday afternoon, as Saddle River Day travels to St. John Vianney in what will be a must-see game between two powerhouse programs. There will be loads of talent on the court for this one. Junior guards Paulina Paris and [player_tooltip player_id="134628" first="Saniah" last="Caldwell"] have been tremendous for Saddle River Day in its 2-0 start, including a 60-point win over Montclair Immaculate. St. John Vianney, 3-0 on the season, has seen strong performances from junior guard [player_tooltip player_id="134626" first="Madison" last="St. Rose"] and senior guard [player_tooltip player_id="134610" first="Katie" last="Hill"].
