Colorado’s new Season B is nearing the halfway point, the standings are taking shape and the powers are ready for shuffling.
Here’s a little of what happened over the past seven days …
--- 5A ThunderRidge moved to 3-3 overall, 1-3 in the Class 5A Continental League, with a 49-43 decision of nearby Mountain Vista. The Grizzlies outscored the Golden Eagles 37-17 in the second half, including 22-9 in the fourth quarter, and were topped by (2022) Adrianna Baker’s 18 points. T’Ridge attempted only five 3-pointers (and made two).
--- Can I help you? Valor Christian remains in command of 5A Jefferson County (7-0 overall, 5-0 in league). In a 75-26 pasting of Pomona, the Eagles had a very high 25 assists on 28 field goals. [player_tooltip player_id="95124" first="Kindyll" last="Wetta"] (PGH-Colorado No. 3 and Colorado signee) had five and four others four – Karrisa Lukasiewcz (2021), [player_tooltip player_id="95136" first="Sydney" last="McKibbon"] (2021), [player_tooltip player_id="95129" first="Jenna" last="Siebert"] (PGH-Colorado No. 11 and Colorado Mines signee) and [player_tooltip player_id="216732" first="Kaylie" last="Whidden"] (2024).
--- No, this isn’t football … in its past five games, 4A top-rated Mullen, behind [player_tooltip player_id="95130" first="Megan" last="Pohs"] (PGH-Colorado No. 12 and Regis signee), [player_tooltip player_id="116776" first="Alexa" last="Dominguez"] (University of Colorado-Colorado Springs), [player_tooltip player_id="95172" first="Gracie" last="Gallegos"] (PGH-Colorado 2022 No. 6) and [player_tooltip player_id="95170" first="Imani" last="Perez"] (PGH-Colorado 2022 No. 4), has surrendered only a combined 95 points.
--- And didn’t you just read this? Holy Family, which lost the 4A title in 2019 to Mullen and would have played the Mustangs in the final again the past March if not for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, also has won its past five games and given up only 99 points. Like the Mustangs, the Tigers, headed by [player_tooltip player_id="145397" first="Tyler" last="Whitlock"] (Black Hills State signee) and [player_tooltip player_id="116779" first="Alyssa" last="Wells"] (2021), are 5-1.
--- So much for experience … Fossil Ridge swept the 5A Front Range a year ago and entered the new Season B without its top six scorers. The SaberCats beat Loveland and Broomfield last week to improve to 7-0, 4-0 behind Samantha Koeberber (2021, 12.4 points) and Maddie Kohler (2022, 10.1 points).
--- 3A Lutheran, which opened the season with a 15-point victory against 4A Holy Family and recently suffered its first loss, a 56-50 setback to 5A Chaparral, had (2021) [player_tooltip player_id="116812" first="Stephanie" last="Schultz"] attain a milestone last week – she surpassed 1,000 points in her career.
--- Her school had only played three games as of last week, but Westminster’s Lex Trujillo led 5A in scoring. The 2023 guard was averaging 22.7 points and made 13-of-35 3-pointers.
