The latest beginning to a girls basketball season in Colorado history happened last week.
Herewith, the first of regular looks back at a shortened regular season:
--- Through two games, Grandview’s [player_tooltip player_id="95167" first="Lauren" last="Betts"] (2022), a Stanford pledge, is averaging 25.0 points and 15.0 rebounds. She has an equal number of rebounds on offense and defense, and made 21-of-27 shots. Teammate and Iowa signee [player_tooltip player_id="95122" first="Addison" last="O’Grady"] (18.5 ppg) has shot 17-of-24.
--- Nice beginning for Vista PEAK Prep’s [player_tooltip player_id="145414" first="Breanna" last="Jefferson"]. The 2022 guard went for 32 points. She shot 13-for-16 (88 percent), including 2-of-3 on 3-pointers, and 4-of-4 free throws. The Bison spanked John F. Kennedy 82-49.
--- Historical opening week for George Washington’s [player_tooltip player_id="95127" first="Maya" last="Whiteside"]. PGH-Colorado’s No. 8 player in the 2021 Class, headed to Long Island, surpassed 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in her career.
--- In previously mentioning GW, add the performance of [player_tooltip player_id="95224" first="Jaida" last="Redwine"], PGH-Colorado’s top 2023, who had 32 points, six assists and one turnover in a 67-38 pounding of Dakota Ridge. The 4A Patriots are 3-0.
--- Defense? Mullen, 4A’s 2019 winner, held Cherry Creek, 5A’s 2019 champion, to single digits in each quarter in a 57-22 whipping. The Mustangs, who hadn’t beaten the Bruins in the previous 20 meetings dating back to 2010, saw [player_tooltip player_id="95172" first="Gracie" last="Gallegos"] (PGH-Colorado’s No. 6 2022) top her team in scoring and hold Creek’s [player_tooltip player_id="116769" first="Abby" last="Wrede"] (Hawaii Pacific) without a basket.
--- Eye-opener? Lutheran knocked off 4A No. 2 Holy Family 59-44 as [player_tooltip player_id="116812" first="Stephanie" last="Schultz"] (2021, 18 points), Mallie Lemon (2022, 16 points) and Kaelyn Kelty (2023, 13 points) led a 21-of-39 shooting performance, notably 12-of-19 on 3s. The Tigers shot only 15-of-43.
--- Among small schools, Longmont Christian’s Taylor Vandenburg, a 6-1 2021, went for 27 points in a 55-19 pasting of Belleview Christian, but shot just 12-of-30.
