With the high school basketball regular season still on pause in California, various grassroots events and open runs have sprouted up to help fill the temporary void. One of those events is the We Run exclusive open runs each Sunday.
Some of the top talent in SoCal have participated in the runs from Stanford commit [player_tooltip player_id="49223" first="KiKi" last="Iriafen"] to Cal commits Jada Curry and Jailah Donald, UNLV commit Alyssa Durazo-Frescas, USC commit [player_tooltip player_id="49225" first="Rayah" last="Marshall"], CSUN commit Michelle Duchemin, and many more.
There are plenty of other players too who have taken part in the open runs who may be flying under the radar a little bit. Here’s a look at some of those players.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="209985" first="Destiny" last="Agubata"] - Etiwanda 2024
An incoming freshman, Agubata has the tools to be a solid wing player. She’s strong in the paint and uses her size to finish over smaller defenders. She can handle the ball and pushes it well in transition. Keeps her head up. She’s close to 6’0 already and can shoot little jumpers in the paint over the defense. She puts the effort in on the defensive end. Comfortable covering perimeter players or post players.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="54103" first="Ari" last="Long"] - Valley View 2023
Long is a sniper from three-point range. She moves well without the ball to get herself open and she has a quick release on her shot. Good catch and shoot player and she can shoot a little off the dribble as well. She’s a good defensive player and she has the length to bother shots on the perimeter. Overall she’s a real solid 3&D propsect who can sometimes make a move off the dribble.
3. Alaini Cardoso - Chaminade 2022
Cardoso is a solid point guard prospect. She can break down the defense and get into the lane. She has solid vision and can find cutting teammates and kick the ball out to shooters off dribble penetration. She can also finish at the rim. A very good shooter, she can knock down the 1-2 dribble pull-up or she can catch and shoot open threes. Very comfortable with the ball in her hands making plays.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="103355" first="Erica" last="Collins"] - Chino Hills 2022
Collins is solid post prospect. She can establish her position in the paint and shoot over the defense for an easy two. Good hands and she keeps the ball high. She’s got some spin moves around the rim and she has a nice little hook shot. She’s developed a good high post game; she’s a decent passer who can see the court from there. She’s a good rebounder, especially on the offensive glass. Rim protector defensively.
