2022 Rankings Update: Newcomers pt 3

I had a chance to catch a couple of these players, [player_tooltip player_id="265540" first="Breyunna" last="Dowell"] (Fairfield) and [player_tooltip player_id="265542" first="Deja" last="Johnson"] (Brownfield), playing in the UIL 3A State Championship game and I couldn’t recall ever seeing them unless they were at some club event and I had no roster. This past weekend, I also caught [player_tooltip player_id="265537" first="Clara" last="Arroyos"] for the first time playing with her SA Lady Hoops club team however the progression from [player_tooltip player_id="265556" first="Keasia" last="Robinson"] who I had seen playing with her Dobie  HS squad, both of these young ladies were standouts at the It’s On Classic <strong>No. 77 [player_tooltip player_id="265537" first="Clara" last="Arroyos"]– 5’8 Medina Valley</strong> I love lasting first impressions and on opening day her ability to create her shot at the #ItsOnClassic just grabbed me because she didn't force anything, she sized up the defender and understood the situation but what I really liked on top of that was her ability to size up who was defending her. On day 2, she took it to even another level as she showed her ability to finish after contact more, as well as her ballhandling and seeing the floor. She battles for rebounds, actually understands positioning and this enables her to outrebound taller opponents. When you show that you can score in the flow as well as take over in certain situations, those are definite pluses many novices would miss yet she brings a lot the table <strong>No. 91 [player_tooltip player_id="265540" first="Breyunna" last="Dowell"]– 5’9 Fairfield</strong> I say things over and over and one of my sayings that I stress is when players show me something that "can't  be taught" and DESIRE is one of them as well as BATTLING being another and when you find players who have that "you won't outwork me" mindset, well it takes me back a different era and what she did during the UIL 3A State Championship was certainly enough for me to know her performance wasn't a career game. She was the leading scorer in that game, 28 points and watching her attacks and create contact to finish or finishing with players hanging her showed me how strong she was, so did her going after everything off the rim or on the floor and was named to the  All-Tournament team <strong>No. 93 [player_tooltip player_id="265542" first="Deja" last="Johnson"]- 5’10 Brownfield</strong> Johnson was also impressive in the UIL 3A  State Championship helping lead her team to victory and being named to the All-Tournament squad and what she did definitely played a huge part in their win by scoring  11 points as well as dishing 5 assists yet it was her overall defense that  caught my eye, I thought she had more rebounds but based on the stats, I was taking some of her twin sisters away, nevertheless, she punished on both ends of the floor and that pressure lasted throughout regulation as well as overtime. She also doesn't force anything, her double-digits came off of 5/8 from the field so making the most of her opportunities to score as well as doing it in the flow helped them win it all <strong>No. 93 [player_tooltip player_id="265556" first="Keasia" last="Robinson"]– 6’3  Dobie</strong> I.m all about progression and I believe I caught her last season at Shooting 4 Da Cure with her Houston Queens club team and I saw so much raw ability that I  marked <a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/2020/07/60-pluses-at-shooting4dacure/">"upside is scary"</a>  so I made it a point to see how long she had been on the grill when I watched her playing for her Dobie HS team and the progression was there. It had been a few months since I caught her so the performance she brought on opening day at the #ItsOnClassic told me that colleges will be a calling because she's a definite prospect and not just because of her size.
