Here are the top 10 point guards I’ve had a look at, some for the first time via live-stream, [player_tooltip player_id="265534" first="Princess" last="Anderson"] and some numerous times over the course of the season checking out their progression
[player_tooltip player_id="65911" first="Breanna" last="Davis"]-5’9 (Red Oak)
Davis has the ability to just take over games in the blink of an eye yet her point guard skills have continued to impress me every season so, in hindsight, she could conceivably be in the combo category yet I love the way she gets others involved and she truly makes those around her better by being vocal, directing traffic and seeing the floor yet that jumper is picture perfect and she can drop it mid to long with ease
[player_tooltip player_id="65915" first="Jazzy" last="Owens"]-5’8 (Frisco Liberty)
Owens may not be related to those people who make the pan sausage yet she continues to sizzle leading her team back to the state championship after coming back from an injury and one of the things I love about her game is that no matter what the setting, if the ball is being pushed or it’s a half-court offense, she stands out with her devastating attacking off the dribble or stop and pop jumper but she can run a team and understands how to get others involved
[player_tooltip player_id="65913" first="Michayla" last="Gatewood"]-5’8 (Desoto)
Speaking of injuries, Gatewood has endured multiple injuries yet her perseverance amazes me as she comes back better every time. She is the glue that holds everything together, the coach on the floor, the great decision-maker, and just a heady player that will make the transition to Texas Tech very easily and although she didn’t play as her high school team won the state championship, she’s one of the reasons I’m picking them to repeat
[player_tooltip player_id="135363" first="R’Mani" last="Taylor"]-5’7 (Shadow Creek)
Taylor was called a #D1Lock by me watching her dribble in the 5th grade, she had on street clothes and I love telling that story because unlike many, mine aren’t tall tales and her ability has kept expanding over the years, like her range which is around the NBA line yet her handling of the ball with either hand and making pinpoint passes, with either hand, on the money is something to see
[player_tooltip player_id="96927" first="Kelliah" last="Walker"]-5’6 (Keller-Timber Creek)
Walker is a player I knew had tons of potential when she was young and although I didn’t call her a #D1Lock in elementary school, heading to high school I knew what was coming and seeing her handle the ball under pressure in the open court and threading the needle for assists or attacking the rim and dishing, well and finishing not to leave out a nice mid to long-range game
[player_tooltip player_id="135379" first="Madison" last="Cockrell"]-5’8 (Bishop Lynch)
Cockrell's SWB impressed me at a young age, that's speed with the ball and being under control and that first impression of this 6th or 7th grader pushing the ball and hitting teammates just left me in a daze yet over the years, she has legitimized her point guard status understanding how to control tempo and handling the ball under pressure yet the speed is still there, she takes defenders at will, she can hit the outside jumper and her efforts helped her school team win the TAPPS 6A All-Tournament where she was selected to the All-Tournament team
[player_tooltip player_id="202488" first="Empress" last="Roberts"]-5’6 (Harker Heights)
Roberts caught my eye last season at the Tyrone Johnson Showcase and her performance received my stamp of approval; so I added her to the PGH Texas Top 100. That stamp was delivered recently in Houston because as good as I thought she was, she's even better and her intensity brought back shades from another era because she brings it on both ends, she can steal the ball playing on, she finishes acrobatically after contact and her jumper is so smooth and watching her elevate over taller defenders is something yet she also runs the offense very well
[player_tooltip player_id="265533" first="Blake" last="Matthews"]-5’6 (Atascocita)
Matthews is just one of those players you don't want to turn your back on because she can blow by defenders almost effortlessly but after watching her solidify herself at the 1 last season, she saw the floor, controlled the tempo, handled the heat, you know the drill, well I didn't know how well she could score and watching her create her jumper sets everything up because her mid to long-range is deadly yet she can attack and dish going full speed
[player_tooltip player_id="265534" first="Princess" last="Anderson"]-5’7 (Beaumont United)
Anderson went completely off during the playoffs, watching her drop over 30 against eventual UIL 5A State Champion Cedar Park told me a lot about her game, I think she had at least 5 three pointers so her release is quick and she sets defenders nicely yet she also can see the floor and handle the ball under pressure and her ability to get her teammates' good looks helped them make a run
[player_tooltip player_id="135366" first="Cammie" last="McKinney]-5’6 (Frisco Memorial)
McKinney was called a #D1Lock by me in the 6th grade, I kept hearing about this young talented point guard and I left refreshed seeing her skill-set as well as unselfishness at an early age. She handled the ball so well and watching her zig-zag through the press to score or assist plus she showed mid to long-range, I knew she was going to be in the mix, and over the years, passes are crisper yet on the target and her range has expanded but she plays under control, doesn't get rattled and gets the job done
