That’s a far cry from the more than 110 I counted at the end of last summer but signings continue to be announced. Many collegiate programs were late actively recruiting for a number of reasons that essentially boil down to head coaches not knowing what they need for 2022. That delay has resulted in a substantial number of talented players still remaining available deserving of a look or three. Below is are four leading guards who are strong threats from beyond the arc.
Catherine Bowman Catherine Bowman 5'5" | SG Bucklin | 2021 State KS , 5’5″, SG, Bucklin, Western Kansas Elite – The first team Southern Plains Iroquois Activities Association selection. She averaged 21.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 2 assists. She shot 31% from three with 34 made and 43% from the floor overall. She also shot 63% from the line (90/143). If you’re looking for a player who can hit a challenged three Bowman is it. She also can run the point and work off the bounce.
Jaya Esquibel Jaya Esquibel 5'5" | SG Lakin | 2021 State KS , 5’3″, PG, Lakin, Wheat State Elite – The first team and co-player of the year Hi-Plains League selection averaged 16.6 points, 3.3 assists, and 2 steals per game. Shot 34% from beyond the arc with 47 made and 37% overall. She also shot 83% from the line (60/72). PGH’s Joel Hannagan says she knows how to score the ball, has scored more than 1,000 points, has a nice game to create off the bounce, and can shoot the three. For her size she can get in the paint to create fouls and dish it off. At July 2020’s Reign the Plains she also showed herself to be a pesky defender.
Eva Peschel Eva Peschel 5'7" | SF Marysville | 2021 State KS , 5’7″, W, Marysville, – The first team North Central Kansas League selection shot 34% from behind the arc with 16 made on the way to averaging 9.1 points per game. She also 5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.5 steals. While her free throw percentage needs improvement, 51% on 38/75 shooting, Peschel has goodood length and quickness, is fast with the ball, and is able to go end-to-end off a steal to finish under pressure.
Lilly Smith Lilly Smith 5'0" | PG Topeka | 2021 State KS , 5’1″, PG, Topeka – The first team Centennial League selection averaged 8.7 points per game while shooting 36% from beyond the arc with 41 made and 38% overall. She also shot 71% from the line (30/42). Brings speed and overall toughness to her team, is able to create plays with the ball or operate well off the ball. She can score from distance and has the confidence to take shots in a variety of tough situations.
