The 2021 Minnesota high school season is now in the books, but that doesn’t mean we’re done with our coverage of winter ball. Beginning today, it is officially high school awards season. As we do each spring, we’ll be selecting our Players of the Year, naming the Prep Girls Hoops All-State teams, as well as handing out honors for Coach of the Year, Breakout Players of the Year, Defensive Players of the Year, and more. We begin today with the Player of the Year and All-State teams for Class A.

We have been writing about Maddie forever, but for most of Minnesota she was still a relatively unknown commodity. Not now. Maddie’s performance throughout the section playoffs and into the state tournament was truly exceptional. If you watched closely then you know: Mathiowetz is a big-time prospect despite coming from a teeny, tiny school. Numbers don’t always tell an accurate story about players, but Maddie’s numbers speak very loudly.
For the season she averaged 33 points per game. Some 17 times she topped the 30-point mark in a game, with five of those performances breaking the 40-point barrier. Her 44-point performance against Mayer Lutheran in the quarterfinals was truly remarkable. For the season, Mathiowetz shot 67% from the field, 42% from three-point range, and 83% at the free throw line. She also averaged 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals per game. of Minneota had an unbelievable year, as well, in leading the Vikings to another title, but Mathiowetz’ status as a Division 1 prospect gives her the edge in our view. When the D1 coaches return to the gym soon, there will be plenty of them sitting courtside to watch Maddie with North Tartan EYBL.
