PGH NJ has been looking closer at the Greater Middlesex Conference, one of the most competitive conferences in the Garden State during this season.
We continue our 2021 season recap series of the GMC in the Red division, which housed some of the best programs in the state.
Akyia Baker – G, St. Thomas Aquinas
Baker had a fantastic senior send-off season, making the most of her last year at St. Thomas Aquinas. She averaged 16.7 PPG, 1.6 made threes a game and 1.2 SPG as a senior, helping guide STA to a perfect 7-0 record in divisional play. She was one of two players to average in double figures and one of four to score over 100 points during this season. She shot the lights out from the perimeter, getting open from off-ball screens to situate herself well for plenty of scoring opportunities. It ended up being the perfect ending for her high school career.
Rosie Regan – F/C, Monroe
There were a few names to pick from on this list, but Regan solidified herself as a big-time scorer, fantastic rebounder, and excellent shot-blocker. She averaged 11.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG and 0.7 BPG and SPG in her senior season for a Monroe team that saw its senior class help carry them to a 13-1 record overall and 9-1 record in division play. She was the perfect combination of a sure-fire scoring option and a shut-down defender, providing relief on the interior that Monroe needed in a big way. Regan will be a tough player to replace coming into the 2021-22 season.
Katie Rausch – G, South Brunswick
Rausch’s second season on South Brunswick turned out to be arguably her best so far in her high school career, averaging 11.9 PPG, 1.6 APG, 1.5 made threes a game and 1.1 SPG in 2021. She took major strides, developing much more into a scoring threat than ever before. That included an added emphasis on driving more into the lane and drawing more contact, which she improved upon from last season to this season. That resulted in many more scoring opportunities for her. If she can continue to improve her game on the defensive end, especially in the rebounding category, that will help round her game out more and make her an overall much more dangerous player to face.
Ghelsey Go – F/C, Edison
Go was a superstar in her freshman season for Edison, averaging 14.0 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.9 BPG and 1.6 SPG, along with 0.8 made threes a game. She is slowly starting to develop her outside game as her interior presence grew in a big way throughout the duration of her first high school season. Go showed that she can put up double-double-type numbers from the jump and that those points don’t need to exclusively come in the interior. She can score just about anywhere on the court, but can come in and crash the boards and provide defensive stability as a fantastic shot-blocker and someone who can create tons of turnovers off steals. She’s going to be an exciting player to watch for years to come.
Tianna Whitney Tianna Whitney 5'9" | SF Edison | 2023 State NJ – F/G, Edison
Whitney is the perfect complement to Go, a sophomore forward that also has double-double potential and can sure up the interior. Edison has things set right now when it comes to forwards because Whitney and Go have already formed a deadly tandem that will create nightmares for programs over the next several years. Whitney averaged 11.3 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 1.5 BPG and 1.0 SPG during the 2021 season, showing that her fantastic freshman season was not a fluke by any means. She’s going to make teams pay on both ends of the court and that will only continue moving forward for her.
