We recently watched a few games between the Cal Stars Red 17U EYBL versus the two following teams in this event and they are Tree of Hope 17U Elite and CO Premier U17-Van Horn. This was day two of the event and here are some more girls that I evaluated and thought were impressive to me.
2023, 6’5, C, Fremont HS (CO), CO Premier U17 - Van Horn, Margaret Mendelson - One of the toughest kids on the floor that just owns the paint each and every time you see her play. Her whole purpose was to hinder the big on the other side and not let them get comfortable in the paint. She is one of the best defender on the team because of her efforts on the floor and how she hinders her opponents games by not letting them get established. Great strategy from a good defender, keep you occupied and then out of sorts on offense.
2023, 6’4, C, La Jolla Country Day HS (CA), Cal Stars Red 17U EYBL, Brea Cunningham - Brea is tough and very skilled at blocking shots, her timing to block shot is remarkable to us, she just seems to be able to time your shot and block it every time you try and score. She is an aggressive rebounder and she is going to battle you for each and every board as long as she is on the floor. She has a good active motor on both sides of the floor, seals her player and scores and is good with contact in the paint, she wants the physicality.
2023, 6’5, C, Heritage HS (CA), Cal Stars Red 17U EYBL, [player_tooltip player_id="171249" first="Amanda" last="Muse"] - Amanda is a beast in my book, she is agile and quick and is relentless on both ends of the floor. She runs like a gazelle and can catch and finish as well as seal her defender and score in the paint. She is probably one of the better defenders on her high school team as well as her club.
2023, 6’3, CG/SF, Rocklin HS (CA), Cal Stars Red 17U EYBL, [player_tooltip player_id="204061" first="Mary" last="Carter"] - Mary can shoot the three ball, along with that she can score from all three levels on the court. She is uncanny, she is a right handed player that drives left all of the time and she is one that really knows how to use her body size. Bodies are flying all over the place when she drives to the basket, get out of the way they might be saying on the court. Impressed with her ability to drive to the rim...
2023, 5’7, PG, Saint Mary’s of Stockton (CA), Cal Stars Red 17U EYBL, [player_tooltip player_id="54091" first="Nia" last="Anderson"] - Nia is strong point guard that can play both positions and contribute to the team, her IQ is high and she sees the floor very well. Her decision making is becoming top-notch and she is a threat to score from all three levels on the floor which makes her a big problem for any opponent. Her best attribute to the game is her ability to break down the defense with paint touches for scores or to assist her teammates for buckets as well.
