A junior to be at Maricopa High School, five foot four point guard Sapphira Reyes is a recent transfer from Basha High School.in Chandler. She moved with her family when they bought a home in Maricopa. Because of transfer rules, she was only able to play in eight games as a sophomore, averaging 4.8 points and 3.3 rebounds. The Lady Rams went 6-11 overall and 1-4 in their conference.
Sapphira was able to talk about the move, her basketball game, and her long and short-term goals.
Q. Tell us about your basketball background?
I’m now 15 and looking forward to July to the start of my junior year.at Maricopa High School. I started playing basketball when I was five years old and played club basketball from third grade to my freshman year of high school. Because of transfer rules, I was only able to play in eight games this past season.
Q. What are your goals, as you start your junior year, both athletically and academically?
My goal is to get A’s and B’s in all of my classes. Athletically, I want to improve my game, both offensively and defensively. I also want to be more of a scoring threat on offense.
Q. What was the experience like playing at Basha High School?
Playing at Basha was a great learning experience. As a freshman, I played on all three teams (freshman, JV, and varsity) and competed in the 6A Premier League. The transfer to Maricopa was made much easier for me because both the coaching staff and my teammates welcomed me. That made the transfer a little less stressful.
Q. Relative to basketball, what will your summer be like?
Summer will include daily two-hour workouts in the gym. This would include dribbling drills, sprints, lay-up drills, jump shooting, and free throw shooting. It will also include the weight room. I also go a few times a week to kick-boxing (UKF) run by Javier Torres. It really has helped my game, especially my hand-eye coordination.
Q. What do you feel are your strengths on the basketball court?
I believe my strengths include dribbling, shooting, and, on defense, pressuring the ball.
Q. What do you feel you have to work on to become a better player?
I have to work on my step-back technique, continue to work on my ball-handling and shooting, and playing team defense.
Q. What was the adjustment like in moving to a new high school?
The academic adjustment was good because coming to Maricopa I felt I was ahead in my studies after leaving Bosha. History is my favorite subject. As I mentioned, my teammates and coaches were there for me and welcomed me.
Q. How about long-term goals? What would you like to do after high school?
I would like the opportunity to play college basketball. Beyond that, I would like to become a veterinarian. My junior and senior years, I’ll be studying in the CAVIT “Veterinary Science Program” and when I complete this program, I’ll graduate as a Certified Veterinary Assistant.
