June is a big month for rankings throughout the Prep Girls Hoops Network, and for the Class of 2023, it marks the transition from underclassman to upperclassman for those ladies entering their Junior years of high school. On the whole, the 2023 list expanded from 150 prospects to 175 prospects, and there was some movement throughout the entirety of the list. As it relates to the 2023 power forward and center groups, there are 48 ladies who have acquired a spot within the Top-175, and four of them are new to the list on PGH Indiana. With a full Spring season “in the books” for the first time since 2019, it helped to provide more clarity as to who the better prospects are throughout the state. Below is a look at those 48 prospects, as well as some added information and analysis of the newcomers, plus a handful of additional girls who have stood out since our last rankings update in March.
Newcomers
As it relates to the Class of 2023, a 25-player expansion is part of the emphasis with regards to our Summer rankings. As we expanded from 150 to 175 prospects, four young ladies at the power forward and center positions are new to the rankings list this time around. They are highlighted below, and if you know them, I think you’d agree they belong here.
Victoria Detraz Victoria Detraz 6'0" | C Morgan Township | 2023 IN , Morgan Township H.S. – Victoria has been an intriguing prospect to me from the first time I saw her last August. She is extremely long, somewhat bouncy, and she runs the floor well North/South. While she still needs to add strength, she does look a little stronger and more confident, plus she plays with a nice motor. As she continues to develop her offensive skillset, her stock will only continue to rise.
Sydney Fream Sydney Fream 5'10" | PF Homestead | 2023 IN , Homestead H.S. – Sydney is about what you’d expect out of a Homestead player. She is quietly tough-nosed, she’s a solid athlete, and she plays with a motor and some basketball intelligence. She does a nice job of working in the mid-post, she can hit the 15-footer, and she has a nose for the ball. But she’s also a nice perimeter ball-screener, and she can defend multiple positions on the floor.
Alyssa Hiller Alyssa Hiller 6'1" | C Portage | 2023 IN , Portage H.S. – Alyssa is still probably a little more upside than substance right now, but she’s a solid prospect with a nice ceiling. She has good size and strength, plus she runs the floor fairly well North/South. She has decent hands and can finish around the block, but she’ll need to develop more of a go-to move soon. She is a nice help-side defend, she’ll block shots, plus she’s an active rebounder.
Maykayla Washington-Cobb Maykayla Washington-Cobb 5'9" | PF Lawrence North | 2023 IN , Lawrence North H.S. – Maykayla stepped up this Winter for the Wildcats, playing big minutes up front for the green and red. She is a strong, physical, hard-working front-liner who likes to initiate contact. She has soft hands and can finish around the basket in a variety of ways. She has really improved her ability to come out on the floor to defend, plus she’s shooting it better facing the basket.
Keep an eye on…
Asiah Baxter Asiah Baxter 5'10" | SF Warren Central | 2023 State IN , Warren Central H.S. – Asiah has always been one of the better ballplayers in this 2023 class, but she has put together an outstanding Spring, and she’s starting to be rewarded with recent Division-I offers/interest. She is a strong kid, athletic in most directions, and she works extremely hard. She has really nice touch around the perimeter, but she’s also a real problem in the mid-post, plus she rebounds it well.
Mallory Heerdt Mallory Heerdt 6'0" | PF Zionsville | 2023 State IN , Zionsville Community H.S. – The 2024 class at Zionsville drew so much fanfare, that I think people somewhat forgot they had nice talent in 2022 and 2023 as well. Mallory is one of those kids, she is a productive and effortful front-liner, and she balances strength and physicality with a nice skillset. She has good hands and can score it on the block, but she also has touch to the 3-point line.
Ashlee Schram Ashlee Schram 6'3" | C Tipton | 2023 State IN , Tipton H.S. – Ashlee really stepped up as a Sophomore for Tipton, but she also had some nice moments throughout the Spring. She is primarily a back-to-the-basket kid, but she has tremendous skill and touch on the low-block. She can consistently knock down the 15-footer, and at the IBCA Top-100 Showcase, she smoothly buried a couple of 3-pointers. Her help-side defense has really improved as well.
Amber Tretter Amber Tretter 6'1" | PF Forest Park | 2023 State IN , Forest Park H.S. – While everyone will benefit from coaches finally being out in July, Amber might see as much of an increase in interest as anyone. She is in an isolated area of the state, and she hasn’t received nearly the attention other prospects have. She is an extremely long, wiry-strong, bouncy, physical, but skilled face-up ’4’. She pursues rebounds as well as anyone and is working on extending her range.
