Continue ReadingThe Mill City Tournament was one for the books, being one of the first tournaments where college coaches could finally fill the gym and look for their next prospect. This past weekend I had my eye on all the shooters. The girls who are automatic, who can throw flames from beyond the arc with no effort. As a coach and trainer I tell kids that if they can be a knock down three point shooter they will have a chance at the next level. Every college team needs a girl who they can count on to knock down big shots consistently. The three point game has emerged the last 10 years and can be a game changer. Coaches love to run three point plays for their best shooter.
These girls showed their range, and shot the ball with confidence. They were able to shoot in many different ways, coming off ball screens, flair screens, off the bounce and catch and shoot. The release from their hand is quick but in rhythm. College coaches keep an eye out on these sharp shooters.
Platinum Division
Kyla Overskei Kyla Overskei 5'11" | SG Maple Grove | 2022 State MN – Minnesota Fury 2022 Premier
Minneota Fury relies heavily on Overskei to knock down big three pointers. They run plays for her to either come off screens or she can catch and shoot with ease. She ended the tournament with 16 total threes hitting at least 2 three pointers in each of the five games. In two of the games we had to call heat check on her where she went off and hit 4 threes in each game. Kyla had one of her best weekends playing in the top bracket and ending with 66 points.
Gold Division
Aby Shubert Aby Shubert 5'8" | CG Kasson-Mant. | 2023 State MN – Minnesota Fury 2023 UAA
Shubert has been on our radar a lot this summer. Joining a new team after many years with the same program and has found her stride. She is so automatic, that every time the ball leaves her hands from beyond the arc you can almost guarantee its going in. Shubert hit a huge buzzer beater three against SD Attack in the semi finals to bring the game to overtime. She came off a flair screen and executed the play perfectly. In that game she hit 5 threes, and helped her team win a big game by one. You think 5 threes is a lot, the game before she was on fire hitting 6. She ended the weekend with 15 total threes and a total of 68 points.
Silver Division
Natalie Beaver – Southern Minnesota Fury 2024
Beaver had one of her best tournaments this year playing in one of the top brackets. In her best game of the season she put up 28 points where she knocked down 4 threes to help her team win by a 10 point margin. Her role on the team is to knock down shots from beyond the arc and she was hot this past week. In her five games, she hit 10 threes and ended up with 57 points with a fourth place finish.
2022 Green Division
Lindsay Hartman – Minnesota Comets 2022 Canesi
Hartman had a very good weekend leading her team to the championship. She’s a unsigned senior who can shoot the ball well. Her teammates look for her to get open from beyond the arc. In all five games she hit at least one three and ended up with 11 total. As good of a shooter she is she can also score in the paint. Hartmann scored in double digits in all the games and ended the tournament with 58 points.
2023 Division
Olivia Harazin Olivia Harazin 5'8" | PG LCWM | 2023 State MN – Minnesota Rise 2023 Wright
Harazin also had one of her best tournaments this year so far leading her team to win the championship game. She shot the three ball with confidence and was ready to shoot when the ball hit her hands. She can do it all on offense but I thought she was the difference maker hitting big shots for her team. She had 11 total threes in the five games and was the second leading scorer for the 2023 division, with a total of 60 points.
2025 Green Division
Morgan Hulke – Minnesota Rise 2025 Southworth
Hulke is only a freshman but has a very high basketball IQ. She made sure to get herself open from beyond the arc and was hard to stop. In all five game she hit at least two threes in each game. In her best game of the tournament she hit 4 threes where she couldn’t miss, putting up 21 points. She hit a total of 14 threes and landed herself on the leader board with 64 total points. If she can continue to shoot with confidence from beyond the arc she will be one of the better shooters in the state as she matures.
