The 2021-22 New Jersey high school basketball season is fast approaching, which has everyone here at Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey incredibly excited for what’s to come.
After what was an unusual, but fantastic 2021 season, abbreviated by the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re expecting a full season for the upcoming academic year and anticipation is already building.
Our updated 2022 New Jersey player rankings list will be coming out very soon, but we wanted to highlight some players in South Jersey who have shot up the rankings over the course of the summer.
The stock rister list begins with [player_tooltip player_id="319335" first="Katie" last="Fricker"], a shooting guard from Cherokee and someone who should be on everyone’s watch lists this season. Fricker showed that she’s one of the best shooters in South Jersey in the spring and she’ll be one of two main commodities for the Chiefs in the fall/winter.
[player_tooltip player_id="134612" first="Alexa" last="Therien"]’s departure leaves a big hole on this team as Therien has been one of the best players in the state over the past few seasons, especially in 2021. Fricker showed, especially in Cherokee’s first meeting against Paul VI, that she’s a dangerous scorer and hits shots in bunches.
She, along with [player_tooltip player_id="134757" first="Gabby" last="Recinto"], will be relied upon heavily for one of the premier high school programs in South Jersey, and Fricker, in particular, has the potential to do some big things in her senior season.
Fricker has some competition beyond the arc in the region as Maggie Campbell, a sharp-shooter from Haddon Heights, is one of two big name seniors coming into this season along with [player_tooltip player_id="319338" first="Marquae" last="Richardson"]-Muse.
Here, we’ll be focusing on Campbell, the team’s best perimeter scorer. Averaging over one made three a game in the spring is a positive sign for the future and with HHHS returning all but one of its roster, the chemistry this team has is incredible.
She moves great off-ball and has a quick release. She’s not afraid to shoot in pressure situations or if she’s well-covered by a defender. That’s created a confident player who’s going to light up the scoreboard come the fall.
The last player we’ll be focusing on in this article is Skylar Fowlkes, a versatile playmaker from Vineland who features both as a forward and guard, though her premier position is as a forward.
In the spring, Fowlkes averaged a double-double and was one of the best and most active rebounders in the Cape-Atlantic League and we’re expecting much of the same coming into this season.
She’s really worked on perfecting her defense along with becoming more of a well-rounded player. She averaged nearly two blocks a game and over two steals a game, so that, combined with the offensive numbers she put up, is a lethal combination.
