I played the point guard position in high school and in college. To me, it’s one of the toughest positions to play in any sport. A good point guard is not just about being able to dribble, but knowing your teammates’ strengths and weaknesses, leadership, understanding time, score, and tempo, being an extension of the coach and making everyone better. Every successful team needs a point guard that can lead their team with their skill set and leadership abilities. In this article, I have evaluated some of the best point guards in the state of Arkansas.
[player_tooltip player_id="304706" first="Ereauna" last="Hardaway"] | 5’7 | 2022 | Jonesboro High School/Mavs Elite
Ereauna is hands down one of the best point guards in the state. When it comes to true point guards, you’ll have a hard time finding someone better. She sees the floor well, finishes with her weak hand in traffic and through contact. Ereauna is a shifty ball handler that loves to work out of the pick and roll for the mid-range jumper or finding the spot-up shooter. She’s deadly in transition with her playmaking ability by always looking to pass ahead for the big running to the rim or the wing filling the lane. She’s great at making other players better by putting her teammates in a position to be successful. She can take over games with her scoring or playmaking ability.
[player_tooltip player_id="175517" first="Chloe" last="Clardy"] | 5’9 | 2023 |Conway High School/CyFair
Chloe is a crafty point guard that can shoot the three-ball and get to the rim. She does an excellent job of attacking the paint and initiating contact to draw fouls. Chloe also puts pressure on the defense in transition with her ability to finish in a variety of ways. Listed as a point guard, Chloe can score the basketball in several ways with the best of them.
[player_tooltip player_id="306133" first="Cheyanne" last="Kemp"] | 5’8 | 2023 | Morrilton High School
If you want a point guard who can score on all three levels, look no further than [player_tooltip player_id="306133" first="Cheyanne" last="Kemp"]. She’s deadly from the 3 point line and does a great job of combining change of pace with change of direction to keep the defense off-balance. Her shiftiness allows her to get into her pull-up or blow by the defender on her way to the rack. She’s equally effective off the catch. Cheyanne can create out of triple threat for the 1 or 2 dribble pull-up. She’s also effective on the defensive end by anticipating passes and playing the passing lanes.
[player_tooltip player_id="306131" first="Jianna" last="Morris"] | 5’7 | 2023 | Sylvan Hills High School
Jiana is a good, solid point guard. She displays the ability to finish in transition through contact. Jiana can create off the dribble or play without the ball. Out of triple threat, she is very effective. She can create space and attack in straight lines looking to making the best play. Jiana also has a respectable three-point shot. She also communicates well with her teammates on both ends of the floor.
[player_tooltip player_id="304739" first="April" last="Edwards"] | 5’9 | 2023 | North Little Rock High School
April is a point guard that can defend. She plays the passing lanes, is aggressive on-ball, and can apply pressure without fouling. On the offensive end April can be a hand full. She can shoot the three, use her dribble as a weapon to get in the lane to finish in traffic vs the rotational defender or find open teammates. She can score from the mid-range and knock down the three-pointer if you leave her open.
[player_tooltip player_id="305925" first="Briley" last="Pena"] | 5’5 | 2022 | Nettleton High School
[player_tooltip player_id="305925" first="Briley" last="Pena"] is a name you need to know. She’s a point guard that can score the ball in a variety of ways. She keeps the ball on a string when she attacks off the dribble. Briley can shoot the three, knock down the mid-range, and finish in a variety of ways. When the ball is in her hands she does a great job of controlling the tempo and pace of the game, keeping her team organized and under control. Defensively she can apply pressure and uses her quick hands to disrupt the offense by getting deflections.
[player_tooltip player_id="305934" first="Brett" last="Gardner"] | 5’6 | 2022 | Southside Batesville High School
I love Brett’s game. This PG does everything a lead guard is supposed to do. She can apply pressure on the opposing team’s point and keep them out of the lane. She can push in transition, attack in the half-court off the dribble efficiently, make the three-pointer, and get her teammates involved. One quality that goes unnoticed is her leadership. The game I saw her play she constantly communicated with teammates on what to do, where to go, telling them good job, and giving high fives. Those things don’t show up on the stat sheet but are huge to a team’s success.
