The PGH New Jersey crew has just released rankings for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 classes over the past month, but in this article, we’re going back to the 2023 class to talk about the No. 13-15 prospects in the state.
We’ve been incredibly impressed with the depth of talent in the state, and it shows in this article.
No. 13: Hope Goodwine Hope Goodwine SF Highland | 2023 State NJ – 5-6 SF, Highland
Goodwine was a breath of fresh air for Highland, a program that was struggling mightily. She’s been a fantastic player over her first two years with the Tartans, but it was last year that really put a lot of eyes on her.
Highland started 5-0 on its way to a 9-6 record, including a 7-1 record in the Liberty division of the Tri-County Conference. Goodwine was the backbone of this team and the player that willed them to immense success.
She posted a career-high scoring average and was electric on the floor. Goodwine posses all the great traits of a playmaker and game-changer on the floor, and Highland is going to be in good hands for the next two seasons.
No. 14: Maddie Branigan Maddie Branigan 6'0" | PF St. Dominic | 2023 State NJ : 6-0 PF, St. Dominic
Branigan is an absolute monster at the forward position, easily one of the best in the state. She was one rebound away from posting a double-double average for the first time in her career and she’s on a mission to do that and then some this coming season.
After a strong freshman season, Branigan’s break-out campaign was her sophomore year and it showed that she can be a consistent 20+ point scorer on the floor and also dominate on the defensive end.
Branigan averaged a block a game last season in 11 games, so the expectation amongst most who follow the game closely in New Jersey is that she’s going to continue to grow on the defensive side. We’ll definitely be seeing another break-out year from her this coming fall.
No. 15: Niyell McCargo Niyell McCargo SG North Brunswick | 2023 State NJ : 5-6 PG, North Brunswick
McCargo is one of the best pure scorers in this junior class and she had the stats to back it up last season, averaging 18.7 PPG for North Brunswick along with a very balanced stat sheet overall.
This is a player who can not only score from just about anywhere on the floor, from the interior to the perimeter, but can also dominate on the defensive side of the ball.
She nearly averaged double figures in rebounds, one block a game and three steals a game, which just shows the sheer amount of ability on both sides of the ball that she possesses.
We continue to profile the best players in the state through PGH NJ’s rankings as the high school season comes through, so stay tuned for more content.
