The class of 2022 was well represented. Let’s take a look at some standout seniors from Sunday:
Kayla Herrera Kayla Herrera 5'4" | CG Alexander | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 5’4” Combo Guard | Alexander HS – Herrera was certainly one of the best playmakers in the building. She was responsible for some brilliant assists, showcasing that she is able to make high IQ passes consistently. The senior guard manipulated defenders with her eyes, delivered accurate passes, and made great decisions. Her vision was excellent as well. Herrera also possesses good handles that allow her to get wherever she wants on the court. She used her crossover moves to get to the basket on several occasions. She was a smooth finisher even when there were several bodies around her. This was one of the best all-around offensive performers from the event.
Lizette Landry Lizette Landry 6'0" | SF Wylie East | 2022 TX | 2022 | 6’0” Small Forward | Wylie East HS – Landry is a bouncy athlete with tremendous size and length. She displayed two-way versatility at the PGH Top 250 Expo. The Wylie East forward floats when leaving her feet, soaring above defenders when attacking the basket off the dribble. Her leaping ability showed up in other places too. She was fantastic as a rebounder and had some big-time blocks on Sunday, highlighted by a chase-down block in her second matchup. Additionally, Landry proved that she is a capable three-point shooter with a quick release when spotting up. Her combination of athleticism, skill, and size will make her a matchup nightmare this upcoming high school season.
Alyssa Berry Alyssa Berry 5'6" Clear Brook | 2022 TX | 2022 | 5’6” Point Guard | Clear Brook HS – Berry exhibited that she has a great feel for the game on offense. The senior floor general was outstanding as a ball handler, showing off her deep package of dribble moves throughout the event. She navigated the floor well and had success utilizing screens in addition to her handle to create space for herself. Berry was also terrific as a shooter from beyond the arc. She consistently knocked down triples, both from the catch and off the bounce. Beyond that, she finished with both hands at the rim, had good body control, and came away with some steals thanks to her active hands at the defensive end.
Jada West Jada West 6'0" | C Brennan | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’0” Power Forward/Center | Brennan HS – West was simply too strong for many of her competitors at the Top 250 Expo. She outmuscled her opponents with regularity on Sunday, proving to be an absolute force in the paint. The Brennan senior started off the opening game of the event with an emphatic rejection, setting the tone for the rest of her day. Her rebounding in particular really stood out. She refused to be outworked, cleaning the glass at both ends. Even when she couldn’t get to rebounds, West was smart enough to hustle to the ball in order to tip it to a teammate. As a scorer, she displayed power on the block as well as solid touch.
Nylah Mundy Nylah Mundy 6'1" Frisco Independence | 2022 TX | 2022 | 6’1” Small Forward | Frisco Independence HS – Mundy was aggressive throughout the expo, resulting in a plethora of high-percentage looks from close range and trips to the foul line. The 2022 forward possesses a long and wiry frame and is light on her feet for someone her size. When you combine that with her relentless motor, it makes her a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenders. She sprinted up and down the court in transition, finished through contact at the rim, and contributed on the boards. Moreover, Mundy showed true versatility on offense by making things happen in the post and on the perimeter. She was decisive in the paint and a serviceable ball handler and shooter when playing on the wing.
Sara Chavez Sara Chavez 6'2" Permian | 2022 TX | 2022 | 6’0” Power Forward/Center | Permian HS – Chavez is another post player who displayed tremendous power when operating down low. She was so good at carving out space for herself in the paint, backing down opponents and finishing with a soft touch. She wasn’t afraid to take some bumps and bruises in the process either. As a rebounder, the Permian senior battled it out vs. some talented bigs all day. Every time I looked up it seemed that she was pulling down another defensive board. Chavez was productive on the offensive glass too, and extremely disciplined when it came to boxing out opposing players. This is a prospect who doesn’t shy away from doing the dirty work.
Alexandra Steele Alexandra Steele 5'10" | SF Flower Mound | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 5’10” Shooting Guard | Flower Mound HS – Steele was the epitome of versatility on Sunday. She can post up smaller defenders, attack the basket off the dribble, and was willing to shoot from the outside. She set hard screens and kept the ball hopping with good swing passes. Steele really did a little bit of everything on offense. The Flower Mound guard was also versatile at the other end, defending multiple positions and utilizing her length to bother opposing ball handlers on the perimeter. This led to tons of deflections and transition opportunities for Steele and her teammates.
Maggie Hutka Maggie Hutka 6'1" | SF Royse City | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’1” Small Forward/Power Forward | Royse City HS – Hutka was another versatile prospect at the Top 250 Expo on Sunday. She operated comfortably as both the ball handler and as the screener in pick-and-roll scenarios, using her instincts and decision making to produce positive results regardless of which role she was in. The Royse City forward converted second chance opportunities after pulling down offensive rebounds. In addition, Hutka’s mobility allowed her to space the floor and play comfortably on the wing. She can provide a team with a lot of different things at both ends of the floor.
