Christopher Newport University HS Shootout Part 1

Christopher Newport University hosted teams 30 plus teams from all over Virginia on campus for a one day tournament.  Provided a great opportunity for teams who don’t typically play during the regular season to get on the court together.  Several games were competitive and there was a lot of talent on the court. [player_tooltip player_id="254967" first="Cyriah" last="Griffin"]-Kings Fork-2024 Cyriah had a great day, she is highly skilled, unselfish and excelled in her role as a floor general.  High IQ player who creates easy baskets for her teammates, is a gifted passer and has the ability to impact the game without shooting the ball.  It is hard to find players like Cyriah, a selfless player who can score at will, but instead chooses to distribute the ball to her teammates and makes those around her better.  Kings Fork is full of talent and with Cyriah leading the way, they will make a lot of noise this season. [player_tooltip player_id="143083" first="Kiara" last="Beal"]-Menchville-2023 Deceptively quick, she has a strong body, absorbs contact and finishes in the paint.  Nice stroke from the 3pt line and her handles and array of moves gets her to the basket.  She has a nice mid-range pull up and skilled passer.  Kiara is a fun player to watch, confident and looks like she is having a good time on the court.  She plays with energy and releases quick on fast breaks for easy layups.  She is an unselfish player who looks to create for her teammates. Sydney Turner-Cosby-2023 Sydney is a hard worker, athletic, bouncy and finds her way to the ball offensively.  She attacks the basketball hard, finishes through contact consistently.  At 5’8, Sydney is a great rebounder on both ends of the floor. She is coming off a huge AAU season, expectations are high for her junior season. [player_tooltip player_id="254955" first="Amari" last="Smith"]-Menchville-2023 Length at 6’, she is a nightmare defensively, creates turnovers, gets lots of deflections.  She is a good ball handler that can score on three levels.  Tall guard, runs the floor, fast and athletic.  She is crafty around the basket and can shoot the 3.  Amari is key to a Menchville roster full of athletic players who like to apply pressure defensively and get out and run. [player_tooltip player_id="254952" first="Cate" last="Carlson"]-Catholic-2023 Did a lot of everything today.  She over powers smaller guards in the paint, she has good size at 5’10 and a college ready frame.  Typically a knock down 3pt shooter, today she showed her ability to get to the basket and finish at the rim.  High IQ player, reads defenses well, sets good screens and rolls to open spot for easy layups.  She rebounded at a high rate and made several nice passes.  Should have a big junior season after coming off a strong AAU campaign.
