Last weekend, Hope International University played host to their annual high school showcase. The event serves as a tune up to the regular season and gives high school teams an opportunity to compete against some top competition. I was able to attend the event on Sunday 10/10 and here’s a quick look at some additional standouts I saw.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="209986" first="Mackenly" last="Randolph"] - Sierra Canyon 2024
Randolph is one of the best frontcourt prospects in the SoCal area. She has a refined post game with great footwork. She can seal off her defender getting good position in the paint and she’s a strong finisher at the rim. She can handle the ball on the break. Good roller in pick and roll and she can draw contact and get to the free-throw line. Good rebounder who boxes out properly.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="49278" first="Kaylee" last="Byon"] - Rosary 2022
A recent Utah Valley commit, Byon was one of the best point guards I saw. She’s a crafty ball-handler and a slick passer. She has great court vision and is always looking for open teammates. She draws the defense on drives to the rim and can kick out to shooters. Her passes are always right on the mark. She has a nice little crossover and while she is a pass first guard, she will take scoring opportunities when she has them.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="263631" first="Nala" last="Williams"] - Long Beach Poly 2022
What stood out the most to me about Williams was her rebounding, especially on the offensive glass. She uses her body well to get the angles to pull down boards. She’s comfortable with the ball in her hands and she was running the break a few times. Offensively, she’s able to get into the paint and she can pass well out of the defense. Does a good job finding open shooters. She’s a solid shooter from three-point range.
4. Emily Xua - Alemany 2022
Xua is a pretty solid ball-handler who does a good job running the break. She’s very quick in transition is always looking ahead for open teammates. Some of her transition passes could be a little more under control at times, but she has the right idea. In the halfcourt, she can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. She does a good job finishing over the defense.
