There are some fantastic teams and players to talk about and in this article specifically, we’ll be taking a closer look at our PGH NJ prospect rankings for the upcoming season.
We go to the 2023 rankings list to talk about the No. 28-30 prospects in the state with the lead-up to the upcoming NJ girls basketball season.
No. 28: Tianna Whitney Tianna Whitney 5'9" | SF Edison | 2023 State NJ – 5-6 CG, Edison
Whitney is one of two main pieces on Edison’s team going into this coming season. She had a break out spring, averaging 11.3 PPG and 8.9 RPG along with 1.5 BPG and 1.0 SPG.
She’s expected to be a main presence at the top of the key, but she’s shown a great ability to adapt and grow a a player. We’ve seen continued growth on the AAU level with Team Miller through this summer and it’s paid dividends.
What makes Whitney stand out, especially as someone who nearly averaged a double-double despite being a 5-6 guard, is her aggression on the floor. It plays well and we’ll see that in full force this winter.
No. 29: Gabby Recinto Gabby Recinto 5'10" | SF Cherokee | 2023 State NJ – 5-9 CG, Cherokee
Recinto is in a really good situation right now at Cherokee as we saw her bursting onto the scene in a big way this spring. She returns as the leading scorer for the Chiefs, averaging 9.3 PPG last season.
What makes Recinto stand out as one of the best players in South Jersey and the Olympic Conference is something that we saw in a big way with Exodus NYC during the summer. She’s someone who is a downhill player, driving well into the lane and welcoming contact from opponents.
Recinto is a gritty player and is not just aggressive, but crafty as a guard. She’ll be retaining the reins at the point for Cherokee, so we’ll be seeing a lot of her in big game situations this winter.
No. 30: Julia Schutz Julia Schutz 5'11" | SF Immaculate Heart | 2023 State NJ – 5-11 SF, Immaculate Heart
Schultz is expected to take a massive step forward this season with IHA losing A"Nyah Barker and Kaylee McKay. She returns as the third-leading scorer on the team and their premiere forward option.
She averaged 6.3 PPG last season, but what we saw from Schultz is a player who improved tremendously from her freshman year, earning All-County Honorable Mention honors.
This is another breakout-type campaign for Schultz coming up. For someone as skilled of an offensive player as her and being the go-to forward for IHA, that presents a lot of strong scoring opportunities and ways to step up.
