Enter the 2nd Annual Preseason Jamboree and Veterans’ Day Classic held at Bethune-Bowman Middle and High School in the Orangeburg area. The game format was nontraditional with two eight-minute halves being held in lieu of quarters.
Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to Rowesville for the festivities. A number of the talents who put forth impressive showings were from the Class of 2023. Here is a look at the juniors who caught our attention.
Camron Fields Camron Fields 5'4" | SG Pelion | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Pelion HS – Pelion is a program that may not be as ballyhooed in Palmetto State hoops circles as others given it has yet to post a winning season recently. Based on Fields’ play at the Veteran’s Day Classic, she is determined to change that. Fields 5’4 connected on a couple of 3-pointers and had no issue drawing contact to find herself at the free throw line. She finished with 10 points in the game the Panthers participated in on Friday afternoon vs. host school Bethune-Bowman.
Halle Lucas – 2023 – Pelion HS – Head Coach Kenneth Tucker is in his third season at the helm of the Panthers program. Between Fields and Lucas, Tucker boasts a really gifted class of 2023 at Pelion out in southern Lexington County. Lucas’ 3-point shot was on point as she was true on a good number of her treys throughout the Panthers’ contest with the host Mohawks. In similar fashion to her teammate Fields, Lucas is also a multi-sport athlete. She has not only participated in basketball while at Pelion, but has exceled as a volleyball player during her time with the Panthers.
Rosandra Bennett Rosandra Bennett 5'6" | SF Scott's Branch | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Scott’s Branch HS – Bennett is in the top 100 of Prep Girls Hoops’ rankings for 2023 and in the top 20 for small forwards. If she has more outings like she did at Bethune-Bowman, look for the Eagles to get back to its winning ways ala much of the Lucinda Stukes era. She, along with Butler, was one of the five starters for the Eagles in its game with North and gave her team plenty of offensive production from all over the floor. Bennett can drain 3-pointers, will collect rebounds and also block shots.
Kwayasia White Kwayasia White 5'5" | PG Fort Dorchester | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Fort Dorchester HS – White 5’5 looks to be an important piece in getting Fort Dorchester back to that point. White is an all-around hustler who finds a way to come away with the ball and create extra possessions for her her team. White showed to everyone in attendance that she possesses a 3-point shot and has no issues drawing contact and heading to the free throw line. She made one trey that accounted for her sole score of the game.
