As I mentioned in the first part of this series, I tried to make sure I saw at least one “small” school in each set of games so as to put eyes on some players who I might not get a chance to see as much this season. This has added to the challenge of figuring out who exactly they were without a roster in hand, however. So, if I am wrong about their name, height, or anything else, please send me a tweet or email and correct me. Thanks!
Game 1 Standouts: Westmoore vs. Community Christian School
Makayla Jackson Makayla Jackson 5'9" | PF Westmoore | 2022 State OK | 5-9 F | Westmoore | 2022 | @23makaylaj
I’ve seen Makayla play before and to be completely honest, she has never stood out like she did on Saturday. She clearly has been doing a lot of work, especially in the post, with her school and club teams. She plays bigger than her 5’9″ frame, due in large part to her extremely long wingspan. She does a great job of high pointing the ball when rebounding and is a tremendous defender down low. She should a good touch for scoring underneath against CCS that I hadn’t really seen – or taken notice of before – and should that become a bigger part of her game I would not be at all surprised to see even more offers come her way during her senior season, According to her coach with Oklahoma Aces she is a great student, very coachable and just a good all-around kid. No wonder schools are having her visit already and you should too!
Channing Apel | 5-9 F | Community Christian | 2022
I loved reading Encyclopedia Brown when I was a kid and today I got to put to the test all of the skills that I learned from ol’ Encyclopedia. After a lot of investigation, I think I have figured out that No. 44 for CCS was Channing Apel. It looks like she is not only a star for the basketball team, but also for the volleyball and soccer teams. She presumably will go to college to play one or all of them, but in case it happens to be basketball, let me tell you what I saw on Saturday. She – much like Makayla – is a long and strong forward who can do a lot with the ball in her hands. She is very fluid in her movement and doesn’t get rattled easily. She was called upon to do a lot offensively and did a great job scoring from all three levels for the Royals. CCS – from what I can tell without a roster – looked to be missing a few very good players, but they did a great job of running the offense through Apel who did not shy away from being the No. 1 option. The Royals could be dangerous this season as they look to be a very well-coached squad that runs their offense and defense with precision.
Game 2 Standouts: Edmond Santa Fe vs. Hydro-Eakly
Jerney Bennett | 6-0 F | Edmond Santa Fe | 2024 | Hudl
Man, Jerney Bennett is going to be a star, let me tell y’all right now. Yes, I know she isn’t in the rankings yet… but, don’t worry, she will be very soon. Last season as a freshman she was All-Conference Honorable Mention and I have a feeling that should she continue to play like she did on Saturday all season long, she will be All-Conference. Period. Just All-Conference. Jerney is long and tall and battles incredibly hard underneath. She has great lateral movement underneath and doesn’t allow even the slightest gap for a slasher to penetrate underneath. This not only leads to a lot of turnovers from guards who thought they’d have an easy little lay-up, but also a LOT of blocked shots. On the offensive end, Bennett is a tremendous finisher and does a great job of playing through contact. She converts her free throws and looks to be a great teammate as well. Her team rallies around her and it will be fun to watch her continue to develop as a sophomore star for the Wolves this season.
Rees Berkey Rees Berkey 5'10" | SF Hydro-Eakly | 2022 State OK | 5-11 PF | Hydro-Eakly | 2022 | @BerkeyRees
Rees made her debut on the rankings this year and I’m starting to think that No. 50 is nowhere near high enough. She is an incredible all-around talent. Not only that, but she has the perfect amount of dirtiness in her game – the good kind of dirty. The kind that makes you want to fight hard for rebounds and dive on the ground for loose balls and take charges. The kind that makes you hit a dagger three and keep your hand in the air a little bit longer than some people might want… usually on the opposing team. Berkey is the real deal and I am so glad that I got to see Hydro with my own two eyes instead of the video that I’ve been watching the past few years. Rees racks up the rebounds with great positioning and of course her height and length. She has a mid-range jumper that is virtually unstoppable and can rack up the three-pointers as evidenced by her three-point shootout win at last year’s tournament. I’m not sure what offers she has already, but to me, Berkey is a D-II player and could become an absolute star at that level. Mark my words.
