I will also be taking a look at some of the only schools that emailed me rosters after the fact, so I’d like to thank those coaches publicly for caring enough for their players to take a few minutes out of their day and send them over – though I am still hesitant to name names, just yet. Thanks for your help and for caring about your kids and their success at the next level.
Game 1 Standouts: Southmoore vs. Tecumseh
Schantel Evans Schantel Evans 6'2" | C Tecumseh | 2022 State OK | 6-2 F/C | Tecumseh | 2022 | @evans_schantel
Schantel made her debut on the 2022 rankings and I had not seen her play in person when they came out, only on video. Now that I have seen the real deal, I can honestly say she is ranked way too low. She is a top-50 player and will be moving up in the next edition of the rankings. She is a very big (obviously) player, but also very strong and still extremely agile. She is an absolute beast of a scorer inside, even against a team with some size of its own in 6A Southmoore. She takes a beating down low, absorbs it, and converts her free throws. Perhaps most importantly is the joy that Evans plays with. She was clearly having a lot of fun on Saturday and you coaches know as well as I that having fun during the grind of a long season can be a very, very important thing. She is talkative and looks to be a great communicator not only with her teammates, but her coaches also. Evans is very good on defense and absolutely outstanding on offense. I look forward to catching up with Tecumseh again later this season!
Alana Edwards | 5-10 F/C | Southmoore | 2024
Another good thing about going to these scrimmages is the chance to see players who may not get huge minutes during the regular season get some big minutes and show you what they can do. Southmoore is absolutely loaded. That’s not to say Edwards won’t get playing time, but as a sophomore, she may not be the first option for a team that could make a serious run at a championship this year. With some of the bigger stars on the bench, Edwards was able to show what she could do down low and showed a great touch around the rim. She is very, very long and fights hard on the block for rebounds, rebounding position and for baskets. She could get pushed around were she to go up against someone with the pure size of a Schantel Evans Schantel Evans 6'2" | C Tecumseh | 2022 State OK , but in the right scheme and with the right supporting cast, Edwards could really stretch the floor and use her size, length and ability to move with the ball to be a true game-changer!
Game 2 Standouts: Putnam City North vs. Sand Springs
Karrigan Powell Karrigan Powell 6'0" | SF Putnam City North | 2022 State OK | 5-11 SF | Putnam City North | 2022 | @karrigan_powell
I’m gonna be fully transparent here and just let you know how my mind works as a scout. Karrigan is our No. 19-ranked player in the class of 2022. She was projected as a high Division-II player when we did the rankings and that was based on seeing her play in person, plus the input of several high school, grassroots, and college coaches. As far as I know, she has two offers; one from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (a JuCo) and the University of Saint Mary in Kansas (NAIA). It really just makes me wonder what I’m missing. I watched her play again in the Moore Super Scrimmage and now even more than a D-II prospect, she looks like a D-I player. She is running the point – the whole offense moves through her and she is completely comfortable in the role. On offense and defense, you can not take your eyes off of her because of her 1000% effort. Powell is an incredible player who scores in bunches from every level and I cannot fathom the lack of offers for her. I am already in the process of sending her name to coaches all over the place to make sure that she doesn’t continue to be overlooked.
Journey Armstead Journey Armstead 5'8" | CG Sand Springs | 2022 State OK | 5-8 CG | Sand Springs | 2022 | @JourneyArmstea1
How ironic that Journey faced off with Karrigan in this game. Two players who are ranked in the top-25 in the senior class this year and are – in my opinion – highly underrated in the eyes of college coaches. Both players should have been inundated with offers at this point and probably have been committed to their dream schools by this point; it is what their work ethic and natural-born talent deserve. Journey is another player who works incredibly hard all game long, never taking a single possession off on either end of the court. She has the ability to take over a game and can seemingly get buckets at will. If her team needs one and the coach asks it of her, she will find a way to get you one. Need a defensive shutdown on this possession? Journey will get you one. She can score from all three levels and uses her tremendous athleticism to finish in an incredible variety of ways. She is a nightmare for the opposing ball handler with quick lateral movement and even quicker hands. Armstead is an outstanding player and any day now I expect to hear about some very big college offers coming her way.
