I know I sound corny at times yet 15 years ago I walked into the Sandra Meadows Arena and something just came over me as I felt the tradition that I had been reading about, the great Duncanville teams from the past and a different type of basketball which was played from around the Dallas area. My daughter, Sydney Colson, Westside team became the first team from this part of Texas to win the championship and she was named MVP of the tournament so those memories, without Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, or The Gram are still embedded in my memories so I’ll be there ALL DAY TUESDAY, I mapped out my schedule and I’ll catch the vast majority of the 32 teams before heading to Mansfield for their event Wednesday and Thursday but peep this, Day 1 Standouts, Top Players from each position, Class Breakdown of Top Performers as well as New Faces I was clueless about so the New Year will keep you going and these two events will play a huge part in my next PGH Texas UPDATE in January
Duncanville
Probably the favorite to win it, [player_tooltip player_id="135381" first="Kiersten" last="Johnson"] (Oklahoma) and [player_tooltip player_id="96932" first="Maya" last="Linton"] (UTSA) along with fellow senior Alicia Marquez who impressed me by knocking down shots when I covered the Duncanville Shootout yet don’t get it twisted, talented junior Victoria Flores can fill it up but so can sophomore sensation Tajanae Gooden, watched her drop 6 deep one in a row at the event, well one was halfway down but it was there. Several talented freshmen as well as one of the top point guards in the state, [player_tooltip player_id="134030" first="Tristen" last="Taylor"] is why I’m saying they’re in the driver’s seat
OUT OF STATE SQUADS
Unlike these people who rank players nationally because they attend their camps, I’m not that good, well I’m not that dumb but I can tell you a #D1Lock at an early age and Arionna Patterson (Walker, LA) is definitely that and more. The talented freshman nickname is SKYWALKER and her team is undefeated coming in
Bartlett and Briarcrest Christian are coming from Tennessee, I know nothing about either and the same can be said for Clovis West (CA) Lovejoy (GA) Fayetville, Jonesboro, and Marion (AR) however I do know that traditionally McEarchen (GA) Conway (AR) and Captain Shreve (LA) have made some noise in the past
SLEEPERS
Hardin Jefferson has Duke signee [player_tooltip player_id="65906" first="Ashlon" last="Jackson"], the #1 player in Texas 2022 as well as a couple of other #D1Locks [player_tooltip player_id="166646" first="Kendall" last="Sneed"] and Chandler Preston-Caver. You know what, let me lock in 6’0 junior [player_tooltip player_id="267348" first="Molly" last="Beavers"] as well
Pearland
[player_tooltip player_id="314168" first="Aryelle" last="Stevens"], [player_tooltip player_id="96125" first="RyLee" last="Grays"], and [player_tooltip player_id="158879" first="La’Niah" last="Thornton"] form probably the best frontline in the Houston area and if [player_tooltip player_id="134034" first="Janae" last="Tucker"] doesn’t tear her ACL, they could have made a deep run and speaking of running as in out of time, special S/O to their head coach Jere’ Adams who I caught putting on shows for Dulles right after the turn of the century
Other Top 100 Standouts playing
[player_tooltip player_id="135359" first="Sydney" last="Ward"] and [player_tooltip player_id="204180" first="Tobi" last="Ademuwagun"] (Village School)
[player_tooltip player_id="135369" first="Victoria" last="Rivera"] (Dobie)
[player_tooltip player_id="135379" first="Madison" last="Cockrell"] (Bishop Lynch)
[player_tooltip player_id="65915" first="Jazzy" last="Owens"]-Barnett (Frisco Liberty)
[player_tooltip player_id="65911" first="Breanna" last="Davis"] (Red Oak)
[player_tooltip player_id="311897" first="Salese" last="Blow"] (Plano)
[player_tooltip player_id="309647" first="Vernell" last="Atamah"] (Mesquite Horn)
[player_tooltip player_id="158684" first="Belecia" last="Martinez"] (Incarnate Word)
[player_tooltip player_id="135385" first="Suni" last="Davis"] (Saginaw)
[player_tooltip player_id="206962" first="Londyn" last="Oliphant"], [player_tooltip player_id="206960" first="Neenah" last="George"], and [player_tooltip player_id="96129" first="Crislyn" last="Rose"] (Sachse)
