For Prep Girls Hoops Indiana, it’s one of our scheduled quarterly releases for player rankings, plus it’s a time when we expand our lists and add new prospects. As we approach late-December, I wanted to give you a glimpse into five young ladies who are sure to be a part of that expansion. Now, these aren’t the only players who will be added, but they are five who have stood out so far this Fall and/or high school season and deserve to be mentioned.
Nylaia Carter, 2024, 5-6 PG, New Albany H.S.
– I honestly don’t know a great deal about Nylaia at this time, as she’s a move-in from Kentucky. She played at the Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville last year, where she did appear in 17 games as a Varsity Freshman on a very good team, averaging 1.8 points and 1.6 rebounds. Our Prep Girls Hoops Kentucky site had her ranked #31 in the Bluegrass State, and she has played grassroots basketball with Kentucky Premier in the past. She should add to a solid Senior backcourt at New Albany.
Jenna Donohoo, 2024, 5-9 PF, Tecumseh H.S.
– Jenna is a really nice frontline prospect who has stepped up this season. She has a fairly strong and athletic frame, she is a multisport kid who excels in each, and she plays with a good motor. She isn’t much of an outside threat right now, but she could continue to develop her perimeter skill these next 2 1/2 seasons. She is strong on the boards, especially offensively, and she is a nice mid-post to low-block scoring threat as well. She’s currently averaging 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Emma Gerdt, 2024, 5-11 SF, Valparaiso H.S.
– If the sibling lineage holds true, Emma will likely grow another couple of inches, as her older sisters are in the 6-1 range. Emma is extremely long and wiry, she’s a fluid athlete in all directions, and she plays with a nice motor. She glides around the floor almost effortlessly. She possesses solid perimeter skill for her age/height, as she can put it on the floor and get somewhere, plus she can knock down the occasional jumper outside. Time will help her finish growing and add strength.
Denyah Jacobs, 2024, 5-7 SF, Lawrence Central H.S.
– Denyah is a powerfully strong, physical, and aggressive wing player. She plays almost a point forward sort of role for her teams, and she does a nice job of getting downhill North/South. She has gotten off to a nice start this season, averaging 14.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game on a team with a lot of wing talent, while also shooting 40% from ’3’ and 70% from the line. As she continues to work on her skillset and make her jumper more consistent, look for her to become a handful.
Makenna Schleman, 2024, 6-1 C, North Newton H.S.
– Makenna popped up on my radar this last month, and she has a lot of potential to continue developing into a nice prospect. She has a solid to strong frame with good length. She plays with a nice motor and is willing to be physical, and she does a nice job of battling around the block. She’s about 6-1 right now but might be pushing 6-2 and eventually see 6-3 over time. On a team starting four Seniors and playing five regularly (three in the 6-0 range), she’s averaging 5.0 points and 5.6 rebounds.
