We’ve been talking about the South v Shore Showcase for quite a bit here at Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey simply because of the fantastic games and talent we saw there. After doing our five takeaways of the South Jersey participants, it’s time to do the five takeaways from the showcase of the Shore Conference teams.
1. Holmdel is a legitimate threat in the Shore
Holmdel has improved in a few seasons into a contender in the Shore Conference and arguably their best win of the season came during the showcase, a 10-point victory over then-undefeated Haddon Heights. The Hornets led by a few points at halftime, but used an impressive third quarter run to separate itself and improve to 9-4. Keep an eye out for Katherine Martini and Alex Loucopoulos for the remainder of the season.
2. Red Bank Catholic made things look easy
The second-best program in the Shore this season coasted to a win against Eastern on Saturday, its eighth 20+ point win of the season. The Caseys also did this without top scorer [player_tooltip player_id="134627" first="Justine" last="Pissott"], who is averaging nearly 20.0 PPG this season. Freshman guard [player_tooltip player_id="333320" first="Christina" last="Liggio"] led RBC on this day with a career-high 18 points, and the duo of Molly Kelly and [player_tooltip player_id="325213" first="Casey" last="Prior"] combined for 26 points. The Caseys are here and they’re ready to fight for Shore Conference supremacy
3. Donovan Catholic came up just short, but is still very much a contender
It was a very tough game for Donovan Catholic on Saturday, facing one of South Jersey’s best in Cherokee. The Griffons came up just short, losing 36-32 in a hard-fought contest. Leading scorer [player_tooltip player_id="135633" first="Gabriella" last="Ross"] scored just seven points in the loss while Olivia Conroy led with 14 points. Despite the result at the end, Donovan Catholic has a potent offensive attack that is one of the best in the Shore and will be a major factor come March.
4. Manasquan has upped its intensity in recent games
There’s something really impressive about the amount of depth that Manasquan has on its roster, extending far outside of its starting lineup. Three players recorded double-figure points in the victory while 10 players recorded a rebound and seven recorded an assist. There were 17 assists for Manasquan’s 59 points on the day and it was just too overwhelming for Camden Catholic as Manasquan won by 20, improving to 12-3 on the year.
5. Lacey isn’t messing around this year
After another convincing win and impressive performance on Saturday against Washington Township, Lacey improved to 8-4 on the season, winning two straight after a two-game losing skid. The senior duo of Sarah Zimmerman and Maddie Bell has been the spark plug for this team as both had fantastic games in the win. Zimmerman led the team with 14 points, along with eight rebounds, and Bell had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. As they go, Lacey goes and we’ll be seeing plenty more of them this season.
