2023
Dakota Watson-5’4 CG (Lutheran South)
Watson had 13 points including 3 from BTA yet her ETA ob doing what I love to see, play the passing lane, was on point and watching her battle for not only rebounds against taller players, she had 4, she also went after loose balls and did a good job on defense, in the set as well as baseline to baseline, here’s what I said in 2017 about her
Samantha Gamez-5’10 SF (Cristo Rey)
Gamez showed a variety of ways to score and her size just added to everything. She created and got her shot off with a hand in her face and she dropped it, this includes the long ball yet she also did a good job attacking the rim but here we go, what I really enjoyed, even more, was her playing the passing lane and that, as well as her timing to “block, alter and (or) deflect shots did it for me
2024
Makynna Robbins-5’10 SF (Lutheran North)
Robbins went completely off and dropped 26 points, without a 3 pointer but she shot over 50% from the field and hit 9/11 from the line, her rebounds had her flirting with a double-double but alas before I saw the stat sheet, my take on her was “she played the passing lane” well and consistently which led to baskets because she handled the ball well in the open court. She also went coast to coast a few times, to score or assist, and her “on the ball” defense coupled with quick hands forced turnovers, she had 4 steals
Bianca Barba-5’6 G (Lutheran North)
Barba also scored in double figures, she had 11 as well as 3 three pointers but a couple of things grabbed early and one was watching her create her shot under pressure as well as handling the ball under pressure while attacking the basket. To keep it going, she applied pressure on the defensive end
Zakiya Umstead-5’6 G (Cristo Rey)
Umstead has plenty of UPSIDE because of the way she instinctively does things like slide on the floor for loose balls, yeah she dives too but she goes hard and she gets after it, and watching her in the open court blow by defenders was nice yet her explosive first step allowed her to do the same thing in the half-court set. She finished strong, after contact, and showed good body control but let me not omit she saw the floor and hit her teammates on the money
