Continue Reading7th graders aren’t supposed to be able to do this stuff, are they? The ‘stuff’ in this case is score 20 points to lead your team to victory against a defensive-minded squad of seasoned veterans in your first-ever Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showcase. Of course there is plenty that Mya Wilson Mya Wilson 6'1" | CG Hill-Murray | 2027 State MN can do on the basketball court that very few 7th graders anywhere can do. That’s why she’s the early favorite for top dog in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2027. Yes, we said 2027. On Monday Mya did all of that and more which is why she leads our list today of Top MLK Day Performers.
There were four games played on Monday. One we have covered in great detail already, that being Holy Family’s monumental upset of Minnetonka. (You can read all about it here.) Since the top performers in that game have already been well-chronicled, we’ll limit our selections here to the best performances in the other three games which turned out this way:
- Mahtomedi 78 Red Wing 58
- Hutchinson 53 Fridley 39
- Eden Prairie 69 Spring Lake Park 31
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Mya Wilson Mya Wilson 6'1" | CG Hill-Murray | 2027 State MN – 2027 guard, Mahtomedi
Mya is just smooth. Her body control is amazing. Her shooting motion, with its soft and slow release, is a thing of beauty. I’m amazed by her ability to elude defenders in so many different ways and make it all look so effortless. Wilson scored 20 on four triples and four two-point field goals against a very good defensive team. Hard to believe she’s just 13.
TOP FORWARDS
Nia Holloway Nia Holloway 6'0" | PF Eden Prairie | 2022 State #45 Nation MN – 2022 forward, Eden Prairie
What can you say about Nia that hasn’t already been said? She is simply the real deal. The University of Minnesota commit makes it look easy some nights. Monday was one of those nights as Spring Lake Park had no answers for the senior, who went 7-for-9 from the field for an easy 18 points.
Brynn Beffert Brynn Beffert 6'0" | PF Hutchinson | 2023 State MN – 2023 forward, Hutchinson
I haven’t met anyone yet who said they like playing against Brynn. Why would you? She’s a handful at both ends of the floor. With a big body, a ton of strength, a high-level skill set and an unflappable demeanor, Beffert can go head-to-head with the best. She also scored 16 points on Monday.
TOP FLOOR GENERALS
Molly Lenz Molly Lenz 5'8" | CG Eden Prairie | 2023 State MN – 2023 guard, Eden Prairie
Eden Prairie looked like a well-oiled machine on MLK Day and a big piece of the credit for that goes to Lenz, who is just so darn competent. The Illinois State commit has all of the tools it takes to control the game, including an innate sense of timing that serves her well. She’s also really tough!
Zoie Centers Zoie Centers 5'5" | PG Mahtomedi | 2022 State MN – 2022 guard, Mahtomedi
Centers is one of the most entertaining players in the state. She just goes hard, attacks the basket on the regular, and moves the ball with the best of them. She plays fast and hard and never shies away from contact of any kind. The Southwest Minnesota State commit scored 12 and had her hands all over this game.
GRITTIEST COMPETITORS
Sonya Potthoff Sonya Potthoff 5'9" | CG Mahtomedi | 2023 State MN – 2023 guard, Mahtomedi
Sonya always brings it, going 100 percent from start to finish. She had the battle scars to prove it when Monday’s game concluded with plugs up her nose to stop the bleeding from some on-court activity. She also had 16 points and played a key role in Mahtomedi’s solid win over Red Wing.
Savannah Schlueter Savannah Schlueter 5'5" | PG Hutchinson | 2023 State MN – 2023 guard, Hutchinson
Schlueter is the definition of scrappy. She just goes hard all the time. She brings a ton of energy to the proceedings and always makes life difficult for her opponents. This season Savannah has also demonstrated that she can score the basketball. The junior had 15 points against Fridley.
RISING STARS
Tori Schlagel Tori Schlagel 5'9" | CG Eden Prairie | 2025 State MN – 2025 guard, Eden Prairie
Tori is a top 10 prospect among Minnesota freshmen. She was in the starting lineup on Monday and was solid as a rock. The 5’9 combo guard is wise beyond her years, stronger and more savvy than the majority of her peers, and seldom makes mistakes. There’s no telling how good Tori can be.
Anna Greene Anna Greene 6'0" | SF Mahtomedi | 2025 State MN – 2024 forward, Mahtomedi
While her 7th grade teammate was making headlines on Monday, Greene was demonstrating why she is a Top 40 prospect in the Class of 2025. She is long, active on the glass, and has nice touch around the rim. At 6-feet, Greene is a solid defender whose length is a real weapon. Anna’s ceiling is going to be pretty high.
INTRIGUING PROSPECT
Brianna Nusbaum – 2024 guard, Spring Lake Park
Brianna has been putting up points pretty consistently of late. Watching her on Monday it’s not difficult to see why. She’s got good length, fairly light feet and nice touch. The lefty showed the ability to make shots from the outside, beat defenders one-on-one, and handle the ball well.
One other new face who caught our attention was 2026 wing/forward Isabella Guetzlaff of Red Wing. She didn’t play a ton of minutes in a veteran lineup but she did enough to get noticed. Guetzlaff has good size and a big frame. We’ll try to see her again soon to learn more.
