Meredith Maier Meredith Maier 6'0" | PF Fairmont Senior | 2022 State WV , PF/C, Fairmont Senior – Jumping from 30th to 2nd in the rankings may seem absurd, but Maier deserved the huge hike.
Oh, yes.
In West Virginia, where talented post players usually stand out, the Polar Bear has done just that on many fronts. Her rebounding, shooting, and defense all rose.
But perhaps standing out the most is her leadership. Watch her teammates and her interact on the court, and you see nothing but smiles or concentrating gazes. Maier’s always teaching her teammates. A little info here, a little info there, there’s always some new tidbit being conveyed from the Marshall commit to a great group of Polar Bears.
Talayah Boxley Talayah Boxley 5'9" | PF Capital | 2022 State WV , PF, Capital – Wing or on the block, you can put the Cougar in either place being comfortable with what you are going to get. She poses an immediate threat to many smaller defenders as she can work them facing or back to the rim or take an opponent off the dribble. Boxley is Capital’s Most Valuable Player.
Natalyia Sayers, SG, Capital – A well-rounded kid who can take over a game whenever she wants, Sayers poses problems for other guards. She’s fast off the dribble, but also comfortable taking over a wing position. There are times she could assert herself more consistently, but that shouldn’t be a problem at the next level. She’s a hard-working player with a great game IQ.
Trinity Bancroft Trinity Bancroft 5'5" | CG Gilmer County | 2022 State WV , SG, Gilmer County – After missing much of last year with a medical problem, Bancroft’s returned with a fire.
In a year Gilmer County’s chasing a state championship, her game is making the Titan’s multi-optional offense more difficult to shut down. Shooting, defense, and rebounding already were strengths of the Titans before the season. With Bancroft in tow, the Titans now own six players capable of scoring in double-digits and another tough defender coach Amy Chapman can throw in the press.
While she stands at just 5-foot-6, Bancroft brings multiple problems to the floor for opposing teams, thus she rose in the rankings.
Daisha Summers Daisha Summers 5'11" | PF Wyoming East | 2022 State WV , SF/PF, Greenbrier East – Daisha is a 5-foot-8 athletic forward who found plenty of success after transferring to Greenbrier East in the offseason. Head coach Jim Justice recently installed her at the top of his 1-3-1 press and the unit has proved tough for many people to inbound the ball. Of course, Summers jumping around and her ability to immediately drop into defense make her that much more lethal.
That isn’t the only place she’s improved. College coaches will like the fact she’s also getting to the rim and foul line a lot more this year. By drawing contact and enjoying the charity stripe, it’s making people second guess stopping her drive, all the more. Also, she’s shooting better and looks good in the regular defense.
