Continue ReadingSunday, I traveled down to Rhode Island to watch an intriguing matchup between Barrington High and Bay View. This fast-paced game featured excellent shooting performances and physical interior play. Barrington carried a 2 point lead into the 4th quarter, and with good defense and offensive execution, they broke the game open, beating Bay View 50-39.
Player of the Game:
Maddie Gill Maddie Gill 5'8" | CG Barrington | 2024 State NewE – Barrington – 5’8’’ – PG – ’24
Gill got her offense going in the second quarter by attacking the basket, getting to the free-throw line, and hitting outside shots. Her 11 points were a big part of Barrington being tied with Bay View at the half. The most impressive stat from Gill was her 0 turnovers in the second half. She drew Bay View’s best on-ball defender, Ahtiana Benway Ahtiana Benway 5'6" | CG St. Mary Academy Bayview | 2023 State NewE , and Gill ran the Barrington offense mistake-free. Down the stretch, she created open looks for her teammates off her penetration and hit timely shots in the 4th quarter to close out Bay View.
Barrington Standouts:
Isys Dunphy Isys Dunphy 5'10" | PF Barrington | 2025 State NewE – 5’9’’ – SF -’25
Dunphy’s defense and rebounding were significant factors in Barrington’s 11 point win. She dominated the defensive glass, and she limited second-chance opportunities for Bay View. Dunphy also showed her versatility on defense in this game. She switched out on the perimeter, kept guards and wings in front of her, and protected the paint well. Dunphy’s athleticism and vertical leap make up for the lack of height at the forward position.
Hailey Walter Hailey Walter 6'0" | PF Barrington | 2022 State NewE – 6’0’’ – PF – ’22
Walter, like Isys Dunphy Isys Dunphy 5'10" | PF Barrington | 2025 State NewE , also did a tremendous job shutting down the paint. It was hard for Bay View to get any points at the rim because Walter and her 6’0’’ frame and long wingspan were standing in the paint. Walter altered several shots and kept Bay View off the offensive glass.
Caroline McConaghy Caroline McConaghy 5'11" | SG Northfield Mount Hermon | 2024 State NewE – 5’9’’ – SG/SF – ’23
McConaghy had 8 points in the win, and 3 of those came on a long-range bomb. McConaghy is a confident shooter who can destroy zone defenses with her sniping ability. McConaghy is a long 5’9’’ wing who runs the floor well and is active on defense. I also liked how she didn’t settle for just three-pointers and attacked the defense, earning herself a few trips to the free-throw line.
Mady Calhoun Mady Calhoun 5'10" | SG Barrington | 2022 State NewE – 5’11’’ – SG/SF – ’22
Calhoun can pull threes from anywhere on the court. The Brown University commit started the game with a deep outside shot and ended with 12 points, including two additional threes. She has good size and strength to go along with her elite sharpshooting, too. Calhoun communicated well on defense, has a high IQ, and was very poised in the 4th quarter making smart plays in high leverage situations.
Bay View Standouts:
Ahtiana Benway Ahtiana Benway 5'6" | CG St. Mary Academy Bayview | 2023 State NewE – 5’4’’ – PG – ’23
My biggest takeaway from the Barrington/Bay View matchup is that Benway is one of the region’s most under-the-radar ’23 prospects. She should be considered a top 50-60 player in New England based on her skill set and intangibles. She finished with a game-high 19 points, including 5 three-pointers, and these perimeter shots came off the dribble and catch. Benway handles the ball well and is aggressive getting to the rim. Her defense also impressed me. She did a good job getting the Barrington guards out of rhythm and made it difficult for anyone to get by her.
Maggie McKitchen Maggie McKitchen 5'10" | SG St. Mary Academy Bayview | 2023 State NewE – 5’10’’ – SF/PF – ’23
Outside of McKitchen’s proficient play on both ends of the floor, I like the toughness and energy she has every possession. Everything McKitchen does is at full speed, and she was impactful specifically on defense. She can defend multiple positions, is a good shot-blocker, and has quick hands, leading to a few deflections. McKitchen is a good offensive player finishing the game with 9 points. She hit 2 threes and is one of the few Bay View players who can create a shot for themselves on the outside.
Siera Baptista Siera Baptista 6'0" | PF St. Mary’s Academy Bayview | 2023 State NewE – 5’10’’ – PF – ’23
When Baptista catches the ball on the block, she is a sure bucket. The Barrington defense were active and did not let the ball get into the paint a lot, but the few post touches Baptista got, she did a good job using her strength to muscle through contact to earn points and free-throw opportunities. Baptista was also the one player who had success on the offensive glass for Bay View. Barrington had difficulty pushing her away from the basket and not allowing Baptista inside position.
