In Game One, Wildwood took a 22-4 lead into the second quarter and didn’t look back in a 51-39 win over Port St. Joe. Game Two was an easy W for Ponce De Leon over Madison County by a score of 52-22. The State Championship was a wild one with Ponce De Leon pulling it out 39-38 as back-to-back State Champs! Here were the top players who showed out in Class 1A on the big stage:
Nevaeh McCoy | Ponce De Leon – MVP
Navaeh is one of the most athletic players in all of 1A. She sees the court well, uses her strength, and can get to the hoop with some crafty moves. Her stat line in the semifinal win was 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals as she also went 10 for 10 from the charity stripe. In the Championship win, she put up a double double with 16 points, 10 boards, 7 steals, and 4 blocks. McCoy went 14 for 14 from the FT line in her two games at Lakeland. The Senior really went out on top!
Carmen Jones | Ponce De Leon
Carmen went 3 for 4 from deep in their semifinal W with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. She hit three huge 3’s in the 3rd quarter of the Championship with another one if the fourth. Her 14 point Championship game made her the second leading scorer for her team. The Junior was easily the best shooter in all of 1A.
Kailani Lindsey Kailani Lindsey 6'1" | PF Wildwood | 2023 State FL | Wildwood
Kailani is the best post player in 1A basketball, hands down. She put up 11 points and 9 boards in their win over Port St. Joe with 3 steals to go with it. Her footwork, mid-range game, and physicality make her nearly impossible to guard in small school ball. In the Championship loss, Lani had 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks. She will have a chip on her shoulder for her Senior year at Wildwood.
Trinidy Harris | Wildwood
Trin led the team in scoring in their semifinal win with 17 points. She was able to get to the rim, hit shots from outside, and she never took a play off on either end. Trinidy couldn’t find her shot in the Championship game, but she finished as the leading scorer for Wildwood with 11 points to go along with a couple of steals. Her Freshman season was really impressive as she will look to continue building on that.
Mimi Larry Mimi Larry 5'10" | PF Port St. Joe | 2022 State FL | Port St. Joe
Mimi kept her team alive in the semifinal loss to Wildwood with 16 points on three 3’s and 7 rebounds. She has good size and could score it at all three levels. PSJ has seen a lot of success in the past decade.
