Offense usually grabs the headlines, but defense can change the outcome of a game. We've watched countless players across the First Coast and beyond, and several have earned our votes as top defenders with their intensity, versatility, and ability to disrupt opponents. Whether applying pressure on the ball, playing passing lanes, challenging shots, or taking on the opposition's toughest players, these players make their presence felt. These prospects take pride in their defensive assignments, bring energy to their team, and often turn defensive stops into scoring opportunities offensive opportunities. In this article, we recognize some of the defensive standouts who earned "the vote" for their impact on the defensive end of the floor.

I've watched [player_tooltip player_id='741336' first='Iliana' last='Dorvilus'] countless times, and one thing that always stands out is the intensity she brings to the court. She applies tremendous pressure on the ball, using her active hands, quick feet, and excellent lateral movement to disrupt opposing guards. Her speed and quickness allow her to cut off drives and prevent opponents from getting to the rim. Dorvilus is one of the top defensive guards in the 2027 class, and what makes her effective is her ability to turn defense into offense. Whether she's forcing turnovers, creating deflections, or disrupting the flow of an opponent's offense, Dorvilus consistently makes her presence felt on the defensive end. She gets the vote as one of the top defending guards in the State.

[player_tooltip player_id='400815' first='Kylie' last='Green'] is one of the top defensive guards in the 2028 class. Green brings length, mobility, and versatility to the floor and has the ability to defend multiple positions. KG does an excellent job of moving her feet, staying active with her hands, and using her length to disrupt opposing ball handlers. She can apply pressure on the ball while staying in front of quicker guards. Green also shows good defensive instincts away from the ball, anticipating passes, getting into passing lanes, and creating deflections that lead to turnovers. One of her biggest strengths is her ability to turn defense into transition layups. What separates Green from many guards in her class is her ability to defend multiple positions. She has the mobility to match up with point guards, the length to challenge shooting guards, and the versatility to defend wings. Green does many of the little things that don't always appear in the stat sheet, but her defensive activity, positional versatility, and ability to create offense from defense make her a valuable presence on the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='934210' first='Kristyonna' last='Harris'] embraces playing defense and consistently makes things happen on that end of the floor. She is a versatile defender who can apply pressure on the ball and match up against multiple positions, including point guards, shooting guards, and small forwards. Harris brings an aggressive style to the game. She blocks shots, challenges others, and dives for loose balls on the floor. Harris competes on every possession and is a workhorse player who impacts the game beyond the stat sheet. Harris brings energy and activity to the defensive end; Harris also has the ability to turn defensive stops into scoring buckets. She takes pride in doing the dirty work and often makes plays that can change the momentum of a game. For Harris, offense often begins with defense, and her impact starts with the intensity and effort she brings on that end of the court. She gets the vote as one of the top defenders on the First Coast.

[player_tooltip player_id='928406' first='Malekhi' last='Merritt'] is one of the most athletic guards in the 2027 class. While she has the ability to attack the rim and finish, her biggest impact comes on the defensive end of the floor. Merritt is usually called upon to defend the opposition's top offensive threat, embracing the challenge of guarding some of the toughest matchups on the floor. She combines good length, quick hands, an impressive reach, and quick feet to disrupt opposing players. Her athleticism also allows her to challenge and block shots and make defensive plays while defending the fast break. Merritt's ability to take on difficult defensive assignments and make plays with her athleticism makes her a valuable defensive presence. I cast my ballot for Merritt and her defensive abilities.

[player_tooltip player_id='1671725' first='Khloe' last='Small'] plays the defensive stopper role for her team, bringing the versatility to guard three or four positions on the floor. Last season, Small was even called upon to defend opposing centers, showing the physical strength to battle bigger players on the inside.
