Kylah McCullers-5’6 G-’23-Madison East
The impressive aspect about every one of these girls, but especially McCullers, is they didn’t get a season to get acclimated to their high school systems. I’ve kept up with the Purgolders’ season, and it’s felt like they’ve just gotten better as the season has gone on. For McCullers in general, I’m impressed with how consistent of a shooter she’s been this season. After some early-season issues, likely related to playing on a new team, McCullers scored over double figures in 17 of her last 18 games of the season. The East junior has a knack to score the ball at a high level, and with a 3-point percentage near 40%, she’s shown her ability to shoot at a high level.
Ava Ehrlinger-5’9 G-’22-Madison East
McCullers’ teammate has also had an impressive regular season. In Ehrlinger’s final regular-season game, she scored a career-high 33 points. For both Ehrlinger and McCullers, this season, they reset the Purgolder program after a season where they didn’t play. The senior hadn’t played a varsity minute before this season and became a crucial figure in the Purgolders’ comeback season. In the Purgolders’ biggest win this season on the road against Middleton, Ehrlinger recorded seven steals in a 50-48 victory against the Cardinals. Not only has Ehrlinger made herself into an excellent player at this level in a season, but she’s also helped get East’s program back on track.
Demetria Prewitt Demetria Prewitt 5'7" | PG Madison La Follette | 2022 State WI -5’9 G/F-’22-Madison La Follette
There may not be a player that has seen a bigger roadblock in their high school career than Prewitt. As a freshman, Prewitt scored over 14 points per game. She didn’t play another high school game until this season. A torn ACL and a season lost to covid meant that she was only going to get one more chance to wear a Lancer jersey, and she’s made the most of this season. Prewitt recently broke the single-season scoring record at La Follette that has stood for decades. She is one of the most mentally tough players in this state.
Malia Green Malia Green 5'7" | SG Madison La Follette | 2022 State WI -5’8 G-’22-Madison La Follette
Green is one of the best shooters in the city of Madison. In her first two seasons, Green was nowhere close to what we see on the floor today. Her ability to space the floor for Prewitt and star guard Aaliyah Smith Aaliyah Smith 5'5" | PG La Follette | 2022 State #19 Nation WI is valuable. I have to imagine that Green put in work outside of the gym, end even without high school games, she managed to get miles better than she was a sophomore. Due to Prewitt Smith, Alayna West Alayna West 5'8" | SG Madison La Follette | 2024 State WI , and Green, the Lancers have a chance to make noise this postseason.
