The matchups are starting to get stronger. The ride this far can be intense. You don’t want your season to end as a senior. One more game to get to the elusive state championship run. The atmosphere and recognition of just playing there is something high school players dream of and will be remembered forever. These are the impact players so far in the qualifiers. With some breakdown of anticipated matchups and close games to escape regional play and punch the ticket for the ride of their lives.
Burlington Notre Dame vs. English Valleys
English valley plays scrappy and tough. Wears you down. They will have to limit their turnovers and score well to pull off the upset over Burlington. Mia Ayers, Senior looks to stay alive and lead her group of gals past Burlington as they did to Montezuma in the last round. Megan Harrell, Senior hopes to do the same and will have to have a strong showing. If Valleys can control the rim like they do it’s likely to be an upset. I like English Valleys in this one.
North Mahaska vs. Martensdale St. Mary’s
The Schilling sisters look to keep Addie’s dream alive of getting a run at state. North Mahaska looks to create turnovers with their intensity and if they can covert them they are my favorite in this matchup. The Blue Devils look to upset the Warhawks. The key to me for them to pull the upset is keeping their turnovers down. They have to lock up the sisters and get steals as they do. Both teams are pretty evenly matched and it should be a barn burner at Pella Christian. Sophomores Sophia Shannon Sophia Shannon 5'10" | SG Martensdale-St. Marys | 2024 State IA and Brynnly German Brynnly German 5'5" | PG Martensdale-St. Marys | 2024 IA look to lift Martensdale to the upset and make it to the dance.
Impact players
Lauren Wilson Lauren Wilson 5'11" | PF Springville | 2022 State IA – Springville – Senior – Her game is smooth for a post. Rebounds the ball at a high clip. Her catch-and-shoot three-point game is silky and she has a quick release that’s hard to guard. Has pretty strong handles as well.
Reagan Mudderman Reagan Mudderman 5'4" | PG Kee | 2022 State IA – Kee – Senior – Lead the state in points per game and a swipper on the deck. Creates massive turnovers for your team and can score from any level. She’s small but don’t let her size fool you this girl can flat out ball.
Emily Williams Emily Williams 5'8" | SF East Mills | 2023 State IA – East Mills – Junior – After coming back from a knee injury the power forward looks to tough it out and keep her state dreams alive. She will go thru any player and rebounds well.
Audi Crooks Audi Crooks 6'3" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State #42 Nation IA – Bishop Garrigan – Junior – The 6’3” center is tough and gets buckets in bunches. Full court assists are her specialty off the rebound. Crazy string shoot blocker looks to be the anchor for her team.
Hailey Stalzer – West Bend-Mallard – Freshman – multi-sport athlete who can get you buckets and hit the three. Very aggressive and will only grow in her game.
Emie Tuhn – Baxter – Freshman – Hit two 3’s in the bolts last win. She will be the difference-maker for this team. Her presence and game are solid for a freshman. As she gains comfort and experience watch her blossom if they make a full run at state.
