Three Team’s stand out to me because of their great defense’s and their ability to score big. To me their is no real easy pick to go all the way. The young talent will decide how this road to state plays out. West Marshall at 20-2 tops my list this year. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at 16-5. Both have a young group of girls that will make some noise in the basketball world for the next three years. Roland-Story at 16-5 is loaded with Senior leadership. That might help them pull off some tough games and make a deep run.
Head coach Fred Zeller is a girls basketball legend. His West Marshall teams always plays hard defense and hold teams to only 31 points against them this season. With a 22 point difference all season. They control their games well. The Trojan’s have some killer freshman in Bella Borgos and Lily Zahnd. Katy Reyerson Katy Reyerson 6'2" | PF West Marshall | 2023 State IA is their x-factor to me. If she can play well and contribute with Borgos and Zahnd they have a great chance of making a solid run and possibly a state championship. Look for them to be a problem for years to come. They are my favorite this year to take the ship.
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont is the next young team I feel will show up very soon on many scouts radar. The rockets have some amazing young freshman in Molly Shafer, and Ava Eastlick. Sophomore Aliya Wagamon is one tough player. Junior Whitney Klyn is an amazing rim protector with 73 blocks this season and rebounds very well. Head coach Tony Fenton has the girls playing strong and together. Shafer’s ability to get turnovers will be huge. If they can stay dominate inside the rockets can sneak thru and make a push to state.
My sleeper for 3A this year is Roland-Story. The norseman ladies have a very strong senior group that plays well together and gives them a balanced attack. Head Coach Maddie Gelber has this team playing great defense as well holding teams to a low 22 points a game. With a commanding 22 point difference this season, and scoring 58 a game. you have to find a way to shut down their balanced attack. The team really shares the ball well. Rebounds well and will make a nice run in the region. Senior’s Reagan Barkema Reagan Barkema 6'0" | SF Roland-Story | 2022 State IA , Madison Geise, and Reece Johnston look to have a chance to get a championship before they graduate. Junior Madi Bauer Madi Bauer 5'5" | PG Roland-Story | 2023 State IA will help the seniors push through the region.
