Continue ReadingI’ll never forget a parent going off on me asking “couldn’t I watch a good game and go ask the coach afterward who the player was”, this was an 11U game, the score was probably 12-8 yet I get kind of upset about something so simple that could into turn into something big yet I keep hearing growing the game while viewing meaningless stuff on social media but I’m sort of in a different mindset having been out here over 20 years yet one thing remains constant, “talent is everywhere” so here are some of the standouts, CHSM did not have a roster yet they had a player that just separated herself and I actually did find out her name
2023
Avery Mier (CHSM Homeschool)
Mier does a little bit of everything and she does it well because her attacking the rim to score was one of the first things that caught my eye, yet she has pretty good court vision, off the dribble, in transition, and even the set. She understands how to create her shot and knocks it down, she rebounds on both ends of the court, goes after the ball off the rim, and even scored on putbacks but what really excited me was not only her defense but her reading the floor and playing the passing lane which led to scoring opportunities because she handled the ball well in the open court, under pressure
Rachel Padilla (CHSA Homeschool)
Padilla showed some quick hands to not only break up plays but to come away with steals while playing “on the ball” defense but she also did a good job setting the defender up and dropped the jumper but she also showed she could ” catch and shoot” it as well as attack the rim from multiple angles. She handled the ball well under pressure and saw the floor
2024
Ava Johnson (CHSA Homeschool)
Johnson is a heady guard that understands how to control the tempo meaning she knows when to push it and when not to but her court vision was nice, she made some tough passes look easy, and watching her zip the ball to teammates cutting to the basket was nice but so was her applying heat on defense which included her playing the passing lane
Kayla Barlow-5’5 G (FBCHA Homeschool)
Barlow is an athletic guard that also creates her shot well and she showed a deceptive first step that enabled her to get to the rim and finish after contact but she also knocks down the jumper and when you add that she applied defensive pressure baseline to baseline, that created some turnovers
Kiaya Kyham-5’6 G (FBCHA Homeschool)
Kyham also did a good job defensively and it was smothering at times as she understands how to trap as well as how to force the opponent in one but she also moved her feet well and beat the opponent to the spot to make them pick up the dribble. She’s one of those “never take a play off” type of player that also dropped the midrange
