BTH Standouts Continued

Good play from numerous participants went on throughout the day at the 2022 BTH Showcase especially from these players listed below:

Lauren Perez, Riverside HS, El Paso, 5’3” Guard 2022

Perez had a very quiet Day 2 of the Showcase in terms of flashiness but that does not mean she did not have an impact on the floor. Perez is a well rounded Guard that can hit 3s, finish in the lane and pass well. The Senior does a great job communicating on the floor and has a high basketball IQ. Specifically on the defensive side as she is a terrific off ball defender and help side defender - At one point during a 5 on 5, Perez doubled the post after an entry pass and did it with perfect timing, sliding down right when the offensive player dribbled the ball forcing her to stop her move and lose the ball.

Victoria Aguayo, Pebble Hills HS, El Paso, 5’7” Guard 2023

Aguayo is a Senior Guard that can do several things on the offensive end; She can attack the basket and finish tough layups after using a ball screen or find the open man after the defense rotates. Aguayo has a good jump shot and has good range that extends out to 22 feet.

[player_tooltip player_id="353936" first="Evann" last="Segura"], Moriarty HS, Moriarty, 5’10” Forward 2023

Segura is a solid big that can score in multiple ways. She can hit the mid range jump shot with good balance and shooting motion or use a one dribble drop step on the block. The Junior has strong hands and is a well rounded rebounder. Segura does a good job of identifying a body, boxing out and securing the weak side board.

[player_tooltip player_id="353749" first="Larissa" last="Laborin"], Centennial HS, Las Cruces, 5’9” Forward 2022

Laborin is a forward that can score in different ways by stretching the defense out; she has good footwork inside the paint and she can hit the mid range jump shot or extend out to the 3pt line. The Senior forward is a good ball handler that can shake defenders in the open court leading to her making layups in transition if she gets a long rebound, steal or outlet pass.

[player_tooltip player_id="391181" first="Maesyn" last="Lopez"], Belen HS, Belen, 6’0” Forward 2023

Lopez is a hardworking big that has the will to compete every possession on both ends of the court. The Junior is a solid rebounder who works the glass endlessly never settling for a missed opportunity to get a rebound. Lopez mainly operates within 10 feet of the basket using a drop step over the shoulder shot but did show she can extend out to the perimeter and occasionally hit the 3ball. Lopez also has a great attitude and great energy as she was constantly smiling and supportive of her peers.

Honorable Mentions:

Brianna Vargas, Burgess HS, El Paso, 5’4” Guard 2023

Vargas is an explosive Guard with a good first step that can finish in traffic and hit deep 3s consistently. Vargas made 13 3s the night prior in the 3pt contest. The Junior is also a good defender that stays in front rarely gets beat to the basket

Maya Contreras, San Elizario HS, El Paso, 6’2” Forward 2024

Contreras is a long athletic big that causes havoc on the defensive end - altering shots, causing deflections, block or steals you name it. With her good size Contreras is able to finish over the top of opposing defenders and can rebound well.

[player_tooltip player_id="403552" first="Carolina" last="Romero"], La Cueva HS, Albuquerque, 5’6” Guard 2022

Carolina “Nina” Romero is a terrific shooter that with deep range that stays balanced, holds her follow-thru and has good form. The Senior Guard is a perimeter threat no matter who’s on her and should not be given room to shoot. Romero won the BTH Showcase 3pt Contest with 15 made 3s on Friday Night.
