The FHSAA State Tournament wrapped up last week, we take a look at the top scorers from the week long event in Lakeland and the RP Funding Center.
Ta’Niya Latson Ta’Niya Latson 5'8" | CG American Heritage | 2022 State #47 Nation FL (American Heritage) – Class of 2022 – 5’10 Guard
Latson was the state tournaments high school dropping 31 points in the semi-final game vs Pine Forest and then followed it up with 24 points in the final’s vs Bishop Moore, averaging 27 points per game for the FHSAA state tournament. The Florida State signee got it done offensively from all spots on the court and in a variety of ways. She shot 64% from the field going 18/28, 75% from 3 going ¾, 88% from free throw line going 15/17, while also averaging 6 assists and 9 rebounds. She was the weeks top player and rightfully so was named Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year.
Lena Girardi Lena Girardi 5'10" | SF IMG Academy | 2025 State FL (Westminster Academy) – Class of 2025 – 6’0 Guard
In the semi-finals, Girardi went toe to toe with Tonie Morgan Tonie Morgan 5'9" | PG FSUHS | 2022 State #18 Nation FL from Florida State. The back and forth was an impressive battle to watch with Girardi dropping 27 points and leading her team to the win, while Morgan dropped 26. In the win, Girardi was 9/15 from the field and 9/11 from the free throw line while also grabbing 14 rebounds, playing all but 51 seconds of the game.
Tonie Morgan Tonie Morgan 5'9" | PG FSUHS | 2022 State #18 Nation FL (Florida State University) – Class of 2022 – 5’8 Guards
In the battle with Girardi, Morgan did everything she could to keep Florida State University in the game but in the end her 26 points were not enough. Morgan dropped 26 on 8/21 shooting, 2/5 from 3, and 8/12 from free throw line. The skilled guard played pretty much the entire game, serving as both the teams primary ball handler and lead scorer.
Tahnyjia Purifoy Tahnyjia Purifoy 5'2" | PG Pine Forest HS | 2022 State FL (Pine Forest) – Class of 2022 – 5’0 Guard
Pine Forest dropped the semi-final game to American Heritage 77-49 but it was not without Purifoy doing everything she could to try and help her team to victory. Purifoy accounted for over half of her teams’ points, scoring 26 of the teams 49 points on 11/27 from the field, 2/7 from 3, and 2/4 from the free throw line.
Nyla Harris Nyla Harris 6'2" | PF Lake Highland Prep | 2022 State #34 Nation FL (Lake Highland Prep) – Class of 2022 – 6’2 Forward
If Ta’Nia Latson was the MVP of the state tournament, than Harris was runner up. She had 26 points and 21 rebounds in the 4A State championship game vs Calvary Christian on 12/16 from the field while going for 32 points and 21 rebounds on 7/10 from the field and 9/12 from the free throw line in Lake Highland Prep semi-final game vs Booker.
Enjulina Gonzalez Enjulina Gonzalez 5'9" | CG Miami Christian | 2022 State FL (Miami Christian) – Class of 2022 – 5’9 Guard
Gonzalez was very good in 2A State Championship leading Miami Christian to a 66-59 win over Faith Christian. Gonzalez was the team’s leading scorer, dropping 24 points on 7/10 from the field and 10/11 from free throw line while also grabbing 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Breanna Gustave Breanna Gustave 5'7" | CG St. Thomas Aquinas | 2022 State FL (St. Thomas Aquinas) – Class of 2022 – 5’7 Guard
Gustave was the high scorer in 6A State Championship game leading St. Thomas Aquinas to a 59-45 win over Wekiva. Gustave scored 23 points on 8/15 from the field, 2/5 from 3, 5/6 from free throw line and grabbed 9 rebounds.
Jada Eads Jada Eads 5'6" | PG Lake Highland Prep | 2024 State FL (Wekiva HS) – Class of 2024 – 5’6 Guard
Eads has been one of the state’s top scorers all season and her performances in the state tournament in Lakeland were no different. She dropped 23 points on 7/22 from the field, 5/14 from 3, and 4/4 from free throw line.
Kalea Rainey Kalea Rainey 5'7" | CG Eustis | 2022 State FL (Dr. Phillips) – Class of 2022 – 5’7 Guard
Rainey was impressive in Dr. Phillips semi-final win over Vero Beach. Rainey scored 23 points on 8/17 from the field, 2/4 from 3, 5/6 from free three line, helping DP advance to the finals with a 79-57 win.
