The first time I went to Sleepy Eye to watch [player_tooltip player_id="109131" first="Madison" last="Mathiowetz"] play it was an ordeal, a treacherous drive on glare ice that had me thinking several times that I should turn around and go home. But I had left the office early that day to make the trip and I was determined to get there even if it took me four hours to make the trek instead of the usual two, which it did. The journey was well worth it, though, as I saw Maddie score 50 points that night for tiny Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (enrollment 75) making it obvious that this was a very special player.
The last time I saw Maddie play a high school game there was a lot of patience involved, too, only the delays came after the game, not before. It was at the Section 4A semifinal game a couple of weeks ago in St. Peter and SESM had just beaten their crosstown rivals from Sleepy Eye High School to advance to the Section final. I wanted to say a few congratulatory words to Maddie and wish her well. So did half of Southern Minnesota, it turns out. So I waited and waited as she posed for pictures with an endless array of people – some family, some friends, many just fans of her unmatchable career.
It was quite a scene, one that made it obvious what kind of impact Mathiowetz has had throughout her high school career, both on and off the court. Along the way she has rewritten record books, impacted countless lives, and changed a high school basketball program forever. Just to put a little frosting on her multi-layered cake before she joins South Dakota State this fall, we are pleased to select Maddie as our Prep Girls Hoops Class A Player of the Year.

<strong>RUNNER-UP</strong>

There’s no question that Jordan is deserving of this award, too. I can’t imagine anyone would argue that. She carried her team to the State Tournament and led the Rangers in every aspect of the game. She set a state record for the most three-point baskets in a single season, further cementing her reputation as one of Minnesota’s top handful of long-bombers. And she demonstrated leadership and maturity throughout. Zubich is a complete player with a very bright future.
