GHSA State Playoffs: Top Guards Pt. 1
I traveled long and far across the entire state of Georgia from the North to the South, East to West to see some of the most intriguing matchups throughout the state tournament. Now that I can finally catch my breath, here are some of the top performers I saw over the past month of the GHSA State Playoffs.
2023 5-2 PG Aalerya Ponder – Thomas County Central
Undersized guard with a stronger frame. Deceptively quick with the ball and has a nice crossover. Skilled ball handler that gets into the lane and finishes with floaters.
2022 5-6 G Amaya Simon – Thomas County Central
High arcing three-point shot. Rain maker on free throws. Effective defender plays with energy. Likes to let it fly from deep.
2022 5-10 G [player_tooltip player_id="352712" first="Carley" last="Haban"] – Rabun County
Big guard that is at her best when getting physical downhill. Stops on a dime for mid-rage pull-ups. Good rebounder. Uses her length on defense. Uses the glass well.
2022 5-5 G Sophie Woodard – Rabun County
Likes the floater and pull-up. Quick hands on defense. Can score in bunches when hot.
2023 5-7 G Laniya Richardson – Northeast-Macon
Lefty has playmaker mindset. Can score at all three levels. Good at getting into the paint and finding the open man. Utilizes the mid-range and floater. Athletic and long for size.
