When players are scouted, points tend to dominate the conversation but basketball savvy minds can tell you that REBOUNDS MATTER. You can be a great offensive team but if you can’t defend, it doesn’t matter. You can be an equally great defensive team but if you can’t rebound, none of it matters. Let’s take a look at the top 10 rebounders from the 2022 Class B State Tournament.
[player_tooltip player_id="99736" first="Kennadi" last="Buchholz"] (Senior) - DeSmet - 17.67 RPG - The Class B Girls Basketball Player of the Year brings home the honors of the top rebounder in the Class B state tournament. Pulling down boards on both ends is nothing new for the senior Bulldog standout. This young lady uses her physicality paired with great length to snatch rebounds from tip to buzzer. Of the nearly 18 rebounds she grabbed per game, over three of them (3.33) came on the offensive end, giving her team multiple extra possessions.
[player_tooltip player_id="100468" first="Avery" last="Broughton"] (Junior) - Corsica-Stickney - 11.00 RPG - The dynamic forward brought down nearly 4 offensive boards and 7 defensive boards per game. Positioning to grab boards is natural for Avery and her vertical paired with great length allows her to get any rebound she wants.
[player_tooltip player_id="99745" first="Hanna" last="Miller"] (Senior) - Aberdeen Christian - 9.33 RPG - The senior forward grabbed 14 rebounds in Round 1 against DeSmet and averaged over 9 on the tournament. Miller has great length and presents a tough ask offensively for whoever she guards. She does a really nice job securing boards on stops on the defensive end of the floor.
[player_tooltip player_id="166689" first="Coral" last="Mason"] (Junior) - Viborg/Hurley - 9.00 RPG - Mason does a lot of everything for the Cougars. This guard is a willing scorer but just as willing to get stops defensively and rebound the basketball. She is aggressive and will attack the glass on both ends, completing her game as an aggressive guard who scores from all over the floor.
[player_tooltip player_id="363192" first="Rhea" last="Tucker"] (Sophomore) - White River - 7.67 RPG - It's easy to underappreciate a talent like Tucker, the sophomore guard/forward from White River. She may not put up the same points per game as some of her fellow Lady Tigers but she does a lot of the work in the trenches and protects the basketball. She put up a solid nearly 8 boards per game including over 3 alone on the offensive end giving her team multiple chances per possession. Any lineup can use a player who averages 8 boards and less than 1 turnover per contest.
[player_tooltip player_id="188116" first="Ava" last="Dinger"] (Senior) - Wall - 7.67 RPG - The Wall standout put up a solid performance in the tournament with over 10 PPG and nearly 8 RPG. The 5'8" senior Eagle plays aggressively and competes on every possession. Her energy and passion to secure possessions for her team make her a valuable asset they will miss in the seasons to come. 1 of 2 seniors on the roster, Ava competed well in her team's state tournament appearance.
[player_tooltip player_id="403792" first="Paige" last="Kjerstad"] (Sophomore) - Wall - 7.67 RPG - The sophomore standout at Wall turned up earlier in the scoring conversations as well. She led the pack on the offensive end of the boards with a whopping 4.33 offensive boards per game. Basketball stat gurus say that teams average about 1.5 extra points per offensive board. You do the math, that means this young lady gained her team around 7 extra points per contest. This type of play matters at the state tournament and the Eagles will hope to see her performance continue at this level over the next 2 years.
[player_tooltip player_id="100472" first="Mallory" last="Miller"] (Junior) - Aberdeen Christian - 7.00 RPG - The 6'4" post player posted solid numbers in the points and boards category. She also paced the Class B athletes with 1.33 blocks per game. Miller is a shot disruptor and can use her length to pull down boards on both ends of the floor.
Estelle Lee (Junior) - Viborg/Hurley - 7.00 RPG - The junior guard may have had the most pivotal performance of any player in the state tournament. Lee gave it her all to help will her team to a state title and stepped it up big time in this year's state tournament. She averaged a solid stat line of 11 PPG, 7.00 RPG, 1.33 APG, 1.0 SPG, and 1.33 TOPG. The junior guard increased every statistic from the regular season to the post-season, understanding the importance of being your best in March. If I had a most improved tournament player award I would give it to Estelle Lee.
[player_tooltip player_id="188390" first="Jeci" last="Ewart"] (Senior) - Aberdeen Roncalli - 7.00 RPG - Ewart is part of a loaded senior group for the Cavaliers. She impressed with 2 offensive boards and 5 on the defensive end per game. Ewart is a competitor who challenges her opponent and demonstrates a high-quality work ethic.
