A couple of weekends ago, Mater Dei High School played host to the Cali Classic presented by Cal Sparks as a kick off to the AAU season. I was able to attend the event on Saturday April 9 in the morning and afternoon. Here’s a quick look at some additional standouts I saw in the 17U division.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="104787" first="Jenessa" last="Cotton"] - Mater Dei 2024
Cotton is a good low post prospect. She can get good post position and she calls for the ball while sealing off her defender. She can muscle the ball through and finish through contact while drawing fouls, but could be a little more patient when making a move in the paint. She does a good job cutting across the middle to set up on the block. She’s a good rebounder, especially on the defensive end boxing out and then throwing a good outlet pass to start the break.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="104783" first="Ryann" last="Bennett"] - St. Anthony 2024
Bennett stood out as a good scoring guard who has a little bit of playmaking to her game as well. She’s a good ball-handler and does a good job looking for, and making entry passes into the post. In the game I saw her, she played well alongside a traditional one, while also handling playmaking duties alongside a shooting guard. Good catch and shoot three point shooter. She can get to her spots on the court and hit the little pull-up jumper in the midrange.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="160304" first="Sa’lah" last="Hemingway"] - Etiwanda 2023
Hemingway has good size and is able to play multiple positions. She can play inside as a four or even at center, and she can move like a wing. She can handle the ball on the perimeter and she can attack the rim off the dribble. Comfortable creating her own shot. She’s a very good rebounder especially on the offensive end getting second shot opportunities. Sets good screens.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="265653" first="Jordyn" last="Call"] - Harvard Westlake 2023
Call stood out as a solid combo guard. She’s a good scorer capable of getting her own shot, but she’ also makes the right passes and looks for open teammates. She’s a good ball-handler who pushes the pace well in transition. She keeps her head up, reads the defense and kicks the ball ahead to teammates on the break. Good shooter from three-point range on catch and shoot. Does a good job moving without the ball and getting herself free for a pass.
