Continue ReadingThis past weekend was the first Easter Hoops Shootout, operated by Heartland Girls Hoops Tournaments. It is the same group that brought us the Flight Invitational in year’s past, they are always very hospitable and host nice events, and there were some high-level teams included this year from a variety of grassroots programs. This is the first of three articles quickly recapping play from this past weekend. I was looking to watch specific teams, so I didn’t see everyone, but below are a handful of 2023 prospects who I felt stood out in the time I was able to see them.

– Maddy was outstanding in parts of two games I was able to see. She has been a key Varsity contributor since her Freshman year, so it’s no surprise that she plays with good poise and confidence. She shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter, but she also has a nice handle and looked to attack the basket straight-line at times. She is someone who should be on all small college radars.

– Because of the combination of her size, strength, and skill, Ashlee just wears down opponents throughout the course of a game. If she doesn’t get started early, she usually contributes later, as she did in this game. She has great hands, good footwork, and touch from all angles inside of 15-feet. She plays with a nice motor, and she has developed into a really nice help-side defender.

– The Miller backcourt comes with a lot of fanfare, but Kaitlyn often gets overlooked. She is such a tough, feisty, skillful point guard, and I think she is going to make some small college program very happy. She understands the game, plays with a motor, and she can handle the ball and make shots with deep range. She’ll scrap defensively, and she rebounds her position well at her height.
Audri Spencer, 2023, 5-6 SG, Northview H.S.
– Audri is a strong, physical, but skillful wing guard who does a little of everything. She has some quickness to her, and she does a nice job of using the dribble to create space. She can initiate the offense when necessary, but she’ much better as a shooter/scorer. She can get downhill and finish through contact, plus she has nice touch in the mid-range and around the perimeter.

– Bailey was good in transition on Saturday, looking mostly to make plays for teammates off the bounce. She has nice length, wiry strength, and has always been considered a dangerous perimeter shooter with some range. But I really like this creative side to her, and I’ve seen it a little with her school team, but it’s nice to now see it against grassroots competition. She also looks a little stronger.
Linzie Wernert

, 2023, 5-8 SF/PF, Lanesville H.S.
– Linzie is an absolute workhorse in all areas of the floor. She has a strong, athletic frame, she plays with an outstanding motor, and she finds different ways to contribute each game, in an effort to help her teams win. She can be the strong, tough-nosed, rebounder/defender type, she can be a big-time scorer/driver from the mid-post, or she can play comfortably around the perimeter.
